Mercedes-Benz releases SL 63 AMG details

Mercedes-Benz has released details of its new 564bhp SL 63 AMG convertible, which is powered by a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8. Despite the SL 63’s high performance it achieves a respectable (for a car like this) 28.5mpg. UK specifications and pricing are yet to be confirmed, but it's to go on sale in the summer.

Lightweight construction helps towards the improved fuel consumption, with the added benefit of more enjoyable driving dynamics. An all-aluminium body, like the SLS AMG, contributes the greatest weight saving, but attention has been paid to shaving weight wherever possible, with composite materials use to maintain rigidity.

The 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 is available with either 537bhp or 564bhp, and 800Nm or 900Nm of torque, depending on whether the AMG Performance package is specified. Regardless of power output, top speed is limited to 155mph and fuel economy is 28.5mpg on the combined cycle, with emissions of 231g/km.

Fuel saving technology is employed in the engine, too, with stop/start and direct injection helping to lower emissions and improve economy.

AMG performance models are designed to offer enjoyable handling, and so the SL 63 AMG has adjustable suspension with settings for Comfort and Sport, as well as a new electro-mechanical steering set up to offer different feedback depending on the suspension settings.

The gearbox is an MCT 7-Speed automatic, as seen in other AMG models like the C63. It, like the suspension, can be set to fulfil the drivers needs, with settings for comfort and economy, as well as sportier settings and a manual override for spirited driving, which simulates double declutching on downshifts.

The interior is well equipped and well trimmed, with leather, sports seats and a wealth of technology including COMAND online, which allows you to connect to the web almost anywhere. Options include active park assistance, keyless go and an ‘Airscarf’ neck warming system.

You can expect pricing and specification details nearer to the cars launch in late summer 2012.
