Surprise new Jeep Renegade revealed

Published 04 March 2014

The new Jeep Renegade, a small SUV, has made a surprise appearance at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. There is a genuine all-wheel drive model, but front-drive will be offered too. It’s much smaller than anything Jeep has produced previously.

Thanks to Fiat taking ownership of the Jeep brand the Renegade uses underpinnings familiar from the 500L – a car of similar size. A Fiat equivalent, the 500X, is expected to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show this September.

It has been designed to meet the requirements of numerous global markets, meaning there’s more than a dozen engine and drivetrain configurations designed to fit different regional tastes. The specifications for European cars are yet to be announced, but you can expect us to miss out on the big petrol engines and gain MultiJet diesels.

Jeep Renegade Cabin

Open-air models, using a system dubbed ‘My Sky,’ are available. Lightweight roof panels can be removed and stowed in the boot to give an open-air cabin. The cabin itself is very familiar – it looks a lot like the cabin of the Fiat 500L with a similar centre stack layout. It manages to have a Jeep identity, though, with different vents and the obvious Jeep branding.

Jeep claims the Renegade has ‘best in class’ off road ability, with a low-range transmission and all-wheel drive that can be selectively turned on or off, to maximise fuel economy on road and maximise traction off road. The ‘Trailhawk’ version has a greater ride height and technology like hill descent control.

Two choices of diesel engine and four choices of petrol engine are available, along with a flex-fuel engine that won’t be available in the UK. One of the big new features is a nine-speed automatic transmission, which will be offered alongside manual and dual-clutch automatic gearboxes – although precisely what we’ll get in the UK is currently unclear.

Expect sales to start before the end of the year, with UK prices to compete with the likes of the MINI Countryman and Nissan Qashqai.
