Frankfurt Motor Show 2015: BMW introduces new plug-in models
BMW has showcased its next generation of plug-in hybrids at the Frankfurt Motor Show with global debuts for the 225xe and 330e. The new 2 Series Active Tourer and 3 Series will return up to 134.5mpg and have an all-electric range of 22 miles. Both models will reach the UK in 2016.
The plug-in 3 Series should be one of the standout models of the Frankfurt show, combining a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a 80Kw motor to return an impressive 134.5mpg.
The rear-wheel drive saloon will emit just 49g/km of CO2, while its all-electric range of 22 miles will allow zero emissions driving in a town or city. As a well as being efficient, the 330e will powerful too, with 264PS and a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds.
The plug-in hybrid 2 Series - dubbed the 225xe - will use similar technology to the BMW i3 with a three-cylinder petrol engine powering the front wheels and an electric motor driving the rear. Emissions will be just 46g/km and the driver will be able to choose between front-wheel, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, with petrol, electric or hybrid powering the respective drivetrains.
There's no details on economy, but BMW tell us the 225xe will be capable of covering 25 miles on an all-electric charge and be capable of covering 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds.
