Honest John Awards 2018: MINI Clubman wins Most Popular Estate crown

Published 03 May 2018

Estate of the Year - MINI Clubman

The MINI Clubman is a great family estate with its barn-style rear doors giving it a real edge when it comes to everyday practicality. Add in its huge boot and economical engines and it’s easy to see why the Clubman is considered the UK’s number one estate by HonestJohn.co.uk readers.

Dan Powell Managing Editor of HonestJohn.co.uk said: "Praised for pairing practicality with rewarding driving dynamics, the MINI Clubman is a stylish alternative to the traditional wardrobe on wheels estate. Over the past 12 months no other car in its class has come close to matching its popularity at HonestJohn.co.uk. As a result it has brushed the opposition aside to be named Estate Car of the Year 2018.”

Except they no longer manufacture the model shown in the picture (the CooperS) and are also indeed stopping manufacture of the John Cooper Works. Leaving one with the option of the underpowered Cooper or the dirty Diesel. ?? Great shame, as the CooperS is superb - I’ve been driving mine for 2 years.

Except that at 6' tall I should need to lose 4" off the top of my head to get into any of the new Minis. I can still get in and out of the original without a problem.

That's simply not true, I'm over six foot tall and I can get in and out of my girlfriends Mini Clubman very easily. The original Mini had loads of headroom but the new version has more than enough for most people. Only thing worth checking is whether the car you tried had the seat height adjusted upwards, lots of shorter people do that with cars in showrooms to the point I can't aways physically get into the car the way it is setup.

How they can say the Mini Clubman is a great estate is beyond belief. We briefly looked at one and the space in the load area is at best similar to a conventional small hatch (especially if you want to carry a spare) and the rear seat space is tight at best with poor access.

There are some truly great estates for Mini Clubman money but the Mini is not one of them.
