The Honda Legend is an overlooked executive saloon that majors on refinement, reliability and generous equipment. Running costs are high and it's less practical than some rivals, but buyers seeking a dependable, comfortable alternative to the usual German premium brands will find it's a genuinely rewarding used buy.

The fourth-generation Honda Legend was one of the most technically advanced executive saloons of its era, yet it sold in tiny numbers in the UK. Overshadowed by the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6, it's now something of a hidden gem on the used market.

If you're after a comfortable, dependable luxury saloon that stands out from the usual German choices, the Legend deserves a look.

Running costs are where buyers need to go in with their eyes open. Fuel economy in the mid-20s mpg is typical, while the high CO2 emissions mean expensive road tax on post-2006 cars. Insurance isn't cheap either, although servicing costs are generally reasonable if you find an independent Honda specialist.

Reliability is one of the Legend's strongest selling points. The V6 engine has an excellent reputation for longevity and major mechanical failures are uncommon when servicing has been kept up. 

That said, this is a complicated car. SH-AWD, adaptive headlights, radar cruise control and the extensive electrical equipment all add complexity, so it's essential to check that every system works correctly before buying. Replacement parts can be expensive and, because so few Legends were sold in Britain, some components may take time to source.

A comprehensive service history is particularly important. Honda originally specified relatively frequent servicing and evidence of regular maintenance is worth paying for.

During a test drive, ensure the automatic gearbox shifts smoothly, listen for suspension knocks and check for warning lights relating to the four-wheel-drive or driver assistance systems. Suspension wear is one of the more common age-related issues so check the MoT history.

The biggest attraction today is value. A well-maintained Legend often costs thousands less than an equivalent German luxury saloon while offering similar levels of equipment and arguably better reliability.

It's never going to be cheap to run, but if you want a refined, rare and genuinely interesting executive car without following the crowd, the Honda Legend remains one of the used market's best-kept secrets.

Honda Legend (2006 – 2009) handling and engines

Under the bonnet is a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 producing 295PS, paired exclusively with a five-speed automatic gearbox and Honda's clever Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system.

Even by modern standards it's an impressive system. The engine is smooth, refined and eager to rev, while the four-wheel-drive system gives the Legend remarkable composure in poor weather and surprising agility on twisty roads.

Performance is still respectable today, with 0-62mph taking around seven seconds, but outright speed isn't really the point. The Legend excels as a relaxed long-distance cruiser, soaking up motorway miles with very little wind or road noise. Ride quality is excellent, while the steering offers more feel than you might expect from a large luxury saloon.

Full specifications

The interior has aged well. Build quality is exceptional, with solid switchgear and materials that have generally stood the test of time.

Every UK car came generously equipped with leather upholstery, heated and electrically adjustable seats, satellite navigation, adaptive cruise control, xenon headlights, premium audio and dual-zone climate control. Many examples also feature advanced driver assistance technology that was years ahead of many rivals.

Space is one area where the Legend falls short. Rear legroom isn't quite as generous as you might expect from such a large car and the boot is smaller than many rivals, making it less practical than a comparable BMW or Mercedes.

Model History

Japanese Car or The Year 2004-2005 and shown at Geneva Motor Show March 2005. 4,957mm long (16' 3") x 1,845mm wide (6' 1") wide.

Using body similar to Thai and US market Accord, new Legend includes a very advanced four-wheel drive, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system (SH-AWD). The system freely distributes the optimum amount of torque to all four wheels in accordance with driving conditions, resulting in a significant enhancement in vehicle manoeuvrability.

3.5 litre, 24 valve, V6, all-aluminium VTEC unit generates 295 hp at 6200 rpm and 353 Nm (260 lb ft) of torque at 5000 rpm. Lightweight magnesium cylinder head covers and a two-piece aluminium die cast intake manifold combine with extensive weight reducing measures employed throughout the car, to deliver a significantly improved power-to-weight ratio.

Low emissions 75 per cent below 2005 Japanese requirements and in the US meet the stringent LEV2-ULEV standards. Compact 5-speed Sequential SportShift can operate in fully automatic mode or driver can select gears using either the shift lever in the centre console or paddles located on the steering wheel.
