citroen xsara Picasso - starting problems - rossakatin

hi I have a y reg xsara picasso. first the power steering pump went so change that. then realised the oil had leaked on alternator and broke that so changed that.then key snaped so had another cut and taped chip to it was working fine bought new battery as altenator didnt charge it. Now problem is car wont start. it was taking ages to turn over now it is only turning now and then but not starting. I had it started this morning but now no joy at all. have read many forums and unable tofind a specific answer. I thought at first would be my transponder chip for key but now am completly baffled. I am fed up with spending money on it so I could really do with some advice. I was going to give starter a hit to see if that would help but cant see it. garages qouting me £50+ for diagnostic just cant afford to pay for that and to fix problem. Also it smells like petrol now so I am super confused. could it be fuel pump or the transponder or am I way off. pleas any help would be appreciated.

From your description it sounds more likely that it is alternator/battery based problem.

As you took the battery off you need to do a BSI reset (body systems interface)

Had to do it 3 times on my old xsara.

  • Put the driver's window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all equipment is switched off.
  • Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition.
  • Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery and wait 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 10 seconds (do not open doors.).
  • Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.
  • Switch on the ignition and check system's functionality.
  • Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds.
  • Remove key open & close door test central locking system.
  • Start the engine and complete the system's check.
