Paying prior to delivery - q5dave
Hi all,

Picking up a new Q5 on the 1st but the dealer is asking for payment the day prior to this so they can register the car?

Is this normal practise for newly registered cars? My concern is if I get there and find something wrong they already have my money in the bank! If it's normal practise I guess I'll just have to go ahead and reject if any kind of problem?

As far as I'm aware, it isn't normal practice. I've bought a few new cars and always settled on the day of collection - my purchases have always involved a part exchange and included part finance and part cash.

Whether a car has been paid for, shouldn't make a difference to registering it.

No, it's not normal practice - as above payment is totally unrelated to registration - which you want on the day you collect anyway.

With one exception I've only ever paid for the car after I've inspected it on day of collection - the one exception was to take advantage of the VAT change from 17.5% to 20%.

Thanks guys, thought it was strange. My gut feeling is they just want to reduce their workload on 1st March but of they can give no reason (there's none mentioned in their t&cs ) as to why they require balance in advance then I'll be refusing to pay until delivery

Inspect car on 28th Feb

Get them to trailer deliver to your home on 28th or on trade plates if local

Drive your car at 12.01 1st march

Sounds perfect but I'm unable to get there to inspect until the 1st due to work commitments/childcare/transport (dealer is not local)
