Ford engine numbers are supposed to be 3-digit numbers, found on the engine cylinder block. Although you've only quoted a 2-digit number, it might still be right if you found it stamped on the engine.
If the mechanic really wants your VIN number, you should find it on the inside floor or sill next to the driver's seat - usually a 17-character code.

I couldn't find it on engine block (though manual says you are right and it should be there) but VIN plate wasn't clear and it was G6. Engine on order. Thanks for your help

Thanks - turned out the VIN plate wasn't clear and the 66 I was looking at was a G6. Engine now on order
PeterUnless the engine has been changed, the log book will have the correct engine number on it.
