zafira 2.2i auto - Thinking of Buying - oldroverboy.

A friend has asked me to "assist " him in finding a 7 seater as he now has 4 young children and can no longer fit them in his 407. he has a budget of £5000 maximum, and, Knowing a local main dealer who I trust, and like have suggested he looks at the above car. His needs were.... Must be an auto, but only 3000 ish local miles a year ( so nott needed to be adiesel with the possible complications of that engine) and looking at the condition of a few i have seen, like the look of this one. The main dealer will service it mot it and provide 12 months parts and labour warranty. I cannnot see anything terribly bad about them after reading HJs reviews, and suggest that this car from a local dealer would be his best option.

Any thoughts?

Not too much inherently wrong with them bar the usual Vauxhall things, although I would get the 1.8 and not the 2.2, it gives less trouble, yes there is a cambelt to change on the 1.8, but the 2.2s timing chain is more likely to give issues ie cost big bucks to mend.

I question putting anyone in the rear crumple zone though...I wouldnt!

Steer clear of the 2.2 Direct in any vauxhall it uses lots of oil by design, the 1.6 or 1.8 are good though.

zafira 2.2i auto - Thinking of Buying AN update - oldroverboy.

Dealer cancelled the deal and refunded deposit as there was contamination in the autogearbox fluid before delivery. Well done the dealer, and helps me not lose a friend

1.6 is to under powered in the zafira, the 1.8 is no boy racer but does pull the zafira along ok.

Its worth trying both the 1.6 and 1.8 petrol, you will notice a considerable difference from a stop start.

The difference in fuel economy will be minor.

He said auto. The 1.8 auto is as sluggish as the 1.6 manual.

That's not too common, but does happen. The usual Valeo combi radiator / transmission cooler at cause here.

More importantly, you should avoid these things like the plague anyway. Vauxhall take a perfectly good Aisin-Warner 'box, with its manufacturer recommended biannual fluid changes, add snake oil and say it's sealed for life. If its previous owners stuck to Vauxhall's recommended servicing and didn't get the fluid changed regularly, the box's internal filter will be stuffed and the clutch banners on the way out by now.

Having said that, they do seem to go on for some time while slipping like billy-ho....

An update.

I have also recommended a gearbox oil change,

Said Vauxhall dealer supplied a newer 2.2i auto Zafira, and when my friend checked the service book, found that service not done before delivery and various minor faults not cured. Excuse was that car had been serviced by the previous owner many months earlier, and eventually was done, but no documentation supplied for this.

Will be having words this morning!
