N/A - Write-off/Scrapped/back on road! - JLP123

Auto checked a 2006 206. It shows up as Cat D write off in June 2006, Then scrapped in Sept. 2006. Yet it's obviously still on the road and has past MOT's. Can anyone clarify why/how it seems to have been scrapped 3 months after the insurance company wrote it off...is this normal????

Many thanks

Yes. Cat D write-off simply means that the vehicle wasn';t economical to repair, but hasn't suffered serious structural damage. Assessors usuaslly write-off a vehicle if the cost of the repairs are more than about 40% ofthe value of the vehicle. A lot of garages have a sideline in repairing Cat D write offs. Nothing wrong with it in principle.

But if a car has been declared as "scrap" I don't think they can be put back on the road now.

There's a difference between being sold for salvage (i.e. saying it's scrap) and actually scrapped. The latter state would require a certificate of destruction and it would be rather tricky to put a squished metal biscuit back on the road.

I suspect that the OPs car was written off and sold for salvage by the insurers.

Not if the written off cars identity has been put on a stolen car.

Could put small castors underneath, and then you've got yourself a skateboard.

Experian Auto check clearly states that it was Cat D in June 2006 and scrapped Sept 2006. Although owner does state that it has been motd twice in their ownership and is in possesion of mot certificates. As MOT centres here are government run it would be tricky (I imagine) to slip anything past them, let alone twice in a row. Unless I can get solid clarification that a car can indeed have been registered as CAT D, then as scrapped a few months later, then be repaired and put back on road I think I'll steer clear.

Actually Cat D is probably more the Stolen and Recovered or minor damage.

This could be a situation where an older car that has suffered damage is still perfectly safe to drive but the cost of repairing it using new parts and a mainstream bodyshop would cost more than the car would actually sell for. Yet the car has some value as a runner.

About 8 years ago my wife drover her car into a wall. At the time it cost around £1000 to repair. The car was worth around £2000. However if she did the same thing today the car would technically be a write off. But I could probably get it repaired using ssecond hand wings, bumper, lights, bonnet and a few other bits for a fraction of that price.

If it was a cat B loss then I would be more concerned.

It's not the CAT D that concerns me. Its the Registered SCRAPPED 3 months later that concerns me. Also as the car was first registered new in 2006 then registered cat d in june of 2006, I cant imagine what damage it sustained in order to put a brand new car beyond economic repair. But that aside I'm still more concerned about the fact it's registered as SCRAPPED 3 months after it was registered cat d!!!

Stop thinking about this car and instead look for another car that has a clear history. There are plenty out there.

If you're looking for a 2006 car, you'd do better with, say, a Fiesta, Polo or Yaris than a 206.
