Swap a Lexus rx300 and Polo 1.2 for a family car? - notmyname

HI

I need some assistance on my second car purchase. We currently own a Lexus rx300 02 plate with 111k miles and a Polo 02 with only 12k miles on it (yes you read that right 12k miles). Neither car really work for us, the lexus is to big for the school run and eats petrol, the polo is 3 doors and a nightmare with 2 kids in car seats and I need more space for long distance relative vists at xmas.

Question 1, would a dealer take both cars in PX? If not is there any possibility that someone would want to purchase either car or should I keep the polo as a collecters item to be used in the next series of life on mars in 2040?

Question 2, What car to purchase? Budget has to be between 5k and 11k but i would like to spend as little as pos. Needs to be auto, leather prefered, with decent boot and good saftey for the kids. I have been looking at fabia or focus estates, any other suggestions? I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible, however i dont want somepthing that is a pig to drive.

Please Help!

Hi.
Theirs no problem in part exchanging two cars against one with a dealer.
Value wise ,the Lexus is worth about £1500 ,the vw about the same even with the very low mileage .To some extent a cars value is a matter of opinion so offers will vary .

The Lexus will be difficult to sell ,the polo very easy .If you wanted to sell the polo yourself on autotrader it would realise about £2000 .

For a replacement car with good economy and reasonable to drive ,have you considered a Mercedes c class estate ,Audi a4 estate or a bmw 3 series estate , all would give a large boot ,good economy as turbo diesels and are easier to find with leather and automatic gearbox .Good examples with reasonable mileage and service history are available in the £9 £10K region .

You mention focus and Fabia .I think both would be difficult to find with leather and auto .

Hi,the Audi would be the better drive ,but more expensive to run ,repairs servicing etc . The skoda would be a sensible ,but not very interesting drive , The 1.6 petrol auto has 105 bhp ,just about adequate .

Personally I would buy a BMW diesel 2.0 ,a better drive ,probably more reliable than the Audi ,good supply of non dealer parts .The boot on the saloons not that big so the estate is a better proposition .The major downside is the rear wheel drive.

Even with traction and stability control they can be difficult in snow .

It comes down to head or heart .If you really enjoy driving I wouldn't buy a skoda automatic .

Leather is only worth having if it is really good quality hide otherwise it has all the charm of vinyl-and it's still slippery and cold in winter. Good quality cloth is a better option for most people.
