golf estate 1.9 sdi 1999 - paticle filter removal - valvebounce

I read somewhere recently that it is legal to remove the particulate filter from the exhaust system. The reason being to cause less expense when it clogs up,more bhp and mpg.

I believe the engine re-maps itself when the filter is removed.,or at least,it doesnt need re-mapping.

Anyone know the facts?

It doesn't need "re-mapping", but it does need the DPF program deleted from the ECU to stop the warning light/error messages. It won't do it on it's own.

If this is relating to the 'golf estate 1.9 sdi 1999' mentioned in the subject, it won't have a DPF fitted. Don't think any 1.9 PD engine did. However, it may be fitted with a diesel oxidation catalytic converter, which is more for chemical reaction than soot filtering.

Thanks for the info Andy,so could the cat be removed without any problems?

I have a mate who has a Dicovery and tows a boat with it,he says that removing his has improved the performance. He has also removed his airbox and filter, and replaced it with a filter that fits directly onto his air intake [cant think of the name of it]

Is it a good idea to get as much cold air to the intake as possible to enhance performance?

You wont have a DPF on this model, and bearing in mine it isnt even turbocharged you wont gain a huge amount from anything you can do to it...a remap can add between 5-10bhp to this engine however.

Cold air intake also wont do much at all, I would leave it standard frankly, it protects the engine much more than a cone filter and the noise level from the engine will increase even more.

You can add a decat pipe though with no MOT worries as the only exhaust test is a smoke output reading.

But you have to inform the DVLA and apply for a new log book to do it correctly.
