We must have had AT LEAST 7mm of snow here in Surrey, on the way from work I saw a car abandoned with the front badly smashed in from a morning prang.

The morning drive consisted of people going at either 2mph or driving as though it was a clear summer day.

Those who have worked up and down the country do notice that snow/ice has more "panic" effect on drivers the further south you go.

When I was working I used to see direct comparisons in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and London - the effect is linear - increasing panic and inability to "drive" the further south.

There was nothing in the forecast about snow where I am but I woke up to snow all over the place but it was gone by 9am.

No snow here but you can see it on the hills as you look towards Cumbria. No panic either - we're not that bothered about it, but even this bother-level drops off as you head towards Scotland....

The problem is that the threshold between when you need to go really slow and when you don't need to can be almost imperceptible until it's too late.

An example. One night I was driving along an A road and it had started to snow. There wasn't much traffic. As the snow grew thicker, I noticed the car was beginning to lose grip and so I slowed down. Meanwhile an idiot in an artic came up behind and was tailgating me. He probably thought I was neing doddery for doing 30 on slippery snow. Eventually he overtook - leaving clear black tyre tracks - his hotter tyres on a heavier vehicle having no problem melting through the inch or so of powdery snow, unlike my tyres.

If you get overtaken by an artic then you are doddering!

Except for in snow when artics will still be doing 5 times the speed of sound.

'Limits on workin' 'ours innit.'

Ditch the chav wheels and get some sensible ones and your tyres will get through to the tarmac too!

I don't have million-spindle chav wheels I'll have you know.

Nor do I have 42 tonnes of Latvian made pet food nailing me to the road either.

It was a farce in the north east yesterday - the A1 blocked, major roads barely moving and not a gritter in sight in the last 24 hours. And for what? a flurry of snow that 20 years ago no one would have even passed comment on!

Nowadays we have snow in December (shock horror!) and its all over the news as 'Yellow Alert!' and 'Drivers advised to stay at home'

Between some drivers inability to deal with a light dusting of snow, and the authorities doing nothing at all, its no wonder we're so screwed by the weather so often. God help us if we actually had some 'extreme' weather like New York did not so long ago.

Reminds me of around this time two years ago. I was in Stockholm and found that the Swedes have a great sense of humour.

The news that East Midlands Airport was closed due to 1cm of snow had just hit and everywhere I went there were people weeing themselves with laughter over it. It was like Swedish national take the p*** out of the English day.

Taxi to the office that morning was a SAAB 9-5 travelling at breakneck speed with all four wheels only very rarely pointing in the direction of motion.

You've got to remember the majority of people who have passed their test within the last 20 years have practically zero experience of snow driving and most will have forgotten the shred of theory they did on it with their instructor.

My Dad enjoys telling me all about the days when even in the 'mild' east of England we had 'proper winters' during which entire localities disappeared yet people ploughed on with their plucky resolve/blind idiocy.

The East of England is never mild if the weather comes in from the east - my newspaper round was about 8 miles a day on my bike and the winter of '62-63 was a real challenge.

In the late '60s I bought an old banger with bald tyres and managed to drive it from the Midlands to East Anglia on packed snow - I learnt a lot in that one journey !

See everybody thinks we're southern pansies here but when that wind sweeps in from Norway it hits us first and I ended up under 4 foot of snow last year.

Wednesday we had an inch and a half in Billericay. No roads were gritted so it lay over ice.

I own an X Trail with M+Snow tyres so I was fine. However I did pass people spinning away whilst I drove past up hills etc. I rescued a colleague and we got into work. No fuss. Plenty of people had real difficulty one in a ditch, Essex had people injured and over 80 accidents. Left the Hybrid at home.
