Sat Nav Updates Cost - julie page

Used to have iGo sat nav but the thing fell of the windscreen while on holiday in Portugal so bought a replacement, a Germin Nuvi from Staples for €80.

Over a year later I thought I update it. They want £75 for a lifetime of updates and £50 for a year.

Get real Germin, I have Sat Nav on my phone, maybe not as good as the Germin but it gets me there and the updates are free.

Anyone know od a good Android Sat Nav app

I get 4 maps a year for £36 for my TT and I get European Speed Cameras for £20 a year. Garmin want £10 per country for maps.

Garmin sem to work well and have pricey extras, the newer TTs (GO series) are electronic garbage with cheap extras.

Yes, I know. I've a Garmin Satnav which I bought when I didn't know anything about them! The £75 which Garmin want for unlimited updates is ridiculous; you'd be better off buying a brand new Satnav which has unlimited updates included. Buying a Satnav which doesn't include unlimited updates is rather similar to buying unsupported computer software; it's going to end up costing you a fortune!

Satnav update files are available as torrents. I have no practical knowledge of this, however, it's just what I've been told.

I use Google maps and Google Navigation on my android phone.

Google Maps now lets you pre-cache maps but Navigation needs a data connection.

For 100% offline use (eg no data signal or abroad where it's expensive) you'll need one of the commercial SatNav apps which aren't cheap. I have the latest version of CoPilot which is pretty good - much better than earlier versions.

TomTom for Android is just out but the reviews are mixed -

Hi.

I've downloaded Navmii to my tablet. It seems to work offline (with GPS enabled). Just about to go abroad and I shall try it. You have to download the app and then the maps you want. Btw the maps are 1 gb+ each so perhaps not for your phone unless you have lots of storage. I should add that I think my tomtom will be better, but hey its free, and a good standby.

Btw I've just updated my tt with new western europe maps for circa £16. It was about time as I've had it about 7 years.

Max.
