Fiat Croma Diesel Multijet 2000 2.4 Automatic - Engine cut-out - popwoody

For the 5th time (in 9 months) the engine cut out as I slowed to approach a roundabout. On four occasions the car had travelled more than 40 miles, on the other 1 mile. This is most disconcerting and dangeroius as traffic behind me is not expecting me to stop. As the gearbox is automatic, it takes a while to engage neutral/park in order to restart the engine. The engine fires straight away and gives no problem until the next occurrence. The car has been main dealer serviced on time and a full diagnostic check carried out - with no problems showing up.

Any suggestions for an explanation and a cure?

Lets be honest, it 12 years old and its a Fiat, how many other Cromas have survived this long.

Needs going to a Fiat dealer or specialist, it may be a known fault. Or it could be the reason we never see Cromas any more.

Car is Multijet 200, registration is 06. It's actually a lovely car,. Not all Fiats bad - have just traded Fiat Panda Climbing with 126,000 miles and still running well. Main dealer says fault probably very difficult/impossible to find without any clues - have just added Wynns engine treatment - perhaps problem will disappear.

Full Fiat Main Dealer Service history and diagnostic check by Fiat Main Dealer - no problems found.

Putting some Wynns in the car will not make the slightest difference.Has the dealership run the car in the outside word with the computer connected up so that when it cuts out it can be seen what the problem might be .I would suggest something in the autobox is failing giving a signal to the fuel pump to stop a common fault in Volvo auto boxes but not so easy to cure.

Thanks for helpful suggestions - difficulty is it has only happened five times in as many months. Do you think it would help if I went into manual mode in town or when slowing down?
