I have seen an escort estate t/d for sale at a local garage
how can I tell if it is a 70 or 90 bhp engine?
The garage owner cannot tell me and there is nothing on the
log book so he says.

If he can't tell you then he's probably an idiot.

Would you willing buy from a dealer who can't even tell one engine from another, and hasn't even thought to ring Ford and ask?

Also, I would be very worried if he serviced it that he used the right oil etc.

You could consider taking the VIN and calling Ford Customer Services who should be able to tell you.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't the 70bhp one have not had an intercooler? My old Mondeo TD had 90bhp, and an intercooler which almost totally obscured the "TURBO" wording cast into the inlet manifold, which led me to believe they must make one with the "TURBO" wording more clearly visible.

Right.90 has turbo+intercooler;70 has turbo only.Intercooler is very obvious on top of engine.Look at the plate on the front crossmember-where the bonnet lock is.If the engine code shown on it starts RT-it's 60ps;RV-70ps and RF-90ps.
