Subaru Impreza GX AWD - Insurance renewal - declaring a no-fault accident - zilphia

It's that time of year when my car insurance is due for renewal and I just wondered if anyone could give me some advice please.

I was involved in an accident in March this year which was not my fault - a van driver came into the side of my car and admitted full liability. After much messing about with my own insurance company, Yes Insurance, I decided to withdraw my claim (as they wanted to write off my perfectly good car) and instead I went to a local garage with an accident management company attached. They handled all my repairs and claimed the costs from the 3rd party insurance company. I was also received a personal injury payout. I didn't pay anything and neither did my own insurance company. I checked with Yes Insurance before I withdrew my claim from them, that as it was a no-fault accident it would not affect my premium next year and they said no it wouldn't. However when they sent me my renewal quote for the coming year it was a full £300 higher than last year!

I have received several much lower quotes from other companys, the best being from AVIVA. They asked me whether I had made a claim within the last 5 years, and I said no as that is the truth as I withdrew my claim from Yes Insurance. But if I go with AVIVA, do I need to tell them about the accident, even though it was all handled outside my current insurance company? I don't want to end up with my new insurance being invalid, but I am scared that telling them will result in a massively high premium.

Any advice would be gratefull received - car insurance is such a minefield!!

They ask you if you have had any accidents or claims in the last 5 years not just claims and then ask you for the details. In your case you say yes to having an accident, but you were not at fault.

They do use a shared database and they will know you were with YES so don't withold information.

Your experience is the same as mine with LV. A no fault accident resulted in LV increasing my premium substantially, I also went to Aviva and it was much cheaper even with declaration of the accident.

Insurers do ask whether there have been any accidents or claims usually in the past five years - and whether or not an accident/claim was fault or non-fault, it still has to be admitted to.

As regards LV, when my partner's 8 month old car was hit by drug dealers involved in a police chase, the accident had to go as a fault claim. Repair bill was in the region of £1800-2000, and as the drug dealers were not insured, went down as a fault claim, as LV couldn't recover their costs from a third party. Our insurance renewals have never increased beyond the usual small annual increase that most policies are subject to.

A few years ago I was involved in a no fault accident whilst in France - car was hit from behind whilst stationary in a traffic queue.

My insurer dealt with it all and did not load the premium at the next renewal. I have since changed to a new insurer (to obtain a better price) and always declare the event, and will do so until it is too old to be required.

My current insuer is John Lewis.

They already know the answer to this question from the shared insurance database, they will take your money and then cancel your insurance at a later date, this will add a "insurance refusal" to your record - combine the two, you will soon be looking at a hefty premium loading!

Go to an old fashioned high street insurance brioker and discuss the issues with them.
