Hi, just changed the EGR valve and the car was running great, hooked up the caravan and when it comes to a hill, the engine management (glowplug light) comes on, then there is a rattling noise coming from the engine and black smoke coming out the exhast, once the light goes off away she goes again no problem, heading on hols in two days --need help!!

The noise could be the injectors.

When a new EGR valve is fitted the Renault CLIP computer system needs to be interrogated and the EGR "registered". I suggest you check if this was this done when it was fitted as I believe this is the cause of your problem.

I changed the EGR valve myself, as the old one was faulty, not sure what you mean about the computer system being interrograted? how and where can i get this done? it has been running fine with the new EGR valve untill i tried pulling weight

At a Renault Service Centre or Renault dealer as they have the CLIP computer facilities. I suggest that you check this out with them first but I am pretty sure this needs to be done. It is when the engine is under load that the EGR is required to operate and it sounds like it is not getting that message from the ECU because the new EGR is not recognised by it. If you are desperate you could always clean the old EGR and inside where it fits and put it back in until your holidays are over. BTW, how do you know that it was not operating ie faulty? I believe that they operate as they should for a long time.

i cleaned the ERG valve as after reading threads on here, it was really full, it ran fine for two days then it had no power at all, as the only thing i had b*****ed about with was the EGR i replaced it and it's run great up till now, i might try putting the old one back in and try it, i have it booked in for a diagnostic on fri so hopefully the fault can be found, Thanks and will let you know the outcome
