Toyota Corolla - Autoglass Repair Complaint - meltonlad

In 2010 i had a chip repaired by Autoglass but in 2011 the stuff they use to fill the chip had come away and the chip was back so was taken back to Autoglass for a repair agian under there warranty cover.... but now its happen again the stuff has come away and so i went to a Autoglass centre on Saturday and asked if they could look at it and if poss repair it again under the warranty but they said they would never repair a repair !!! and stated to me that if the resine had come away from the first repair then the screen would have to be replaced as they cant repair it again....

so i asked for the screen to be replaced under the warranty but then he said that i looked like a new chip and said that they would not replace unless i paid my £75 excess.. so i rand the head office in bedford and they have it on there system that the repair was repaired again and that it would have to be passed to another dept. so today they have rang me and said that they have spoken to the cambridge branch and as they say it looks like a new chip they will not replace my screen.... but do admit that they should of never done a repair again.... so what a great way to get out of replacing a screen under there warranty cover.....

what can i do peeps to sort this out ??? im not happy that they can just say that and walk away but they are more than happy to take my £75 to replace the screen.... i have said that they can have the car for a full inspection of the screen as they will not find any other repairs on the screen !!!!

If its a new chip they should simply repair it, old chips may not be re-repairable but a new chip is a new chip and another free repair. If its not repairable pay the £75 excess and have a new screen, its part of the joys of motoring.

Its not a new chip !!!! its a chip from 2010 thats been repaired TWICE already and its Autoglass who is saying its a new chip so thay can get out of there "life time guarantee" they have looked at screen and cant see/spot any other repaires done but they just wont admit its down to them !!!!! why should i have to part with my excess when its down to there workmanship failing !!!!

There's clearly some aspect of the chip that makes a successful repair impossible.

With the benefit of hindsight, they should have said in 2010 that it wasn't possible to repair the chip successfully so your only option would have been to pay the excess and have a new windscreen.

The fact that they've twice attempted to repair it free-of-charge doesn't give you any grounds for a free replacement.

I know it's going to cost you money but that's the way this should have been dealt with in the first place.

Modern glass is very lightweight and cheap, especially in the cheap cars. It gets cracked or dinted very easily.. It's rubbish.

Cue in the glass repair scam.

Cue in the glass replacement scam.

Cue in the insurance scam.

If it's a new chip, ask them to point out the old one for you.

I work in the industry and have 25 years experience of repairing screens so I will give you the inside track on what is going on here. I see this problem every day now. The majority of my work yesterday was recfifying badly done repairs done by others.

You can sort the problem in two ways, the legal way or the practical way?

The legal way.

Autoglass have repaired your screen and have issued a "lifetime guarantee" and this guarantee has induced you to do business with them as it is a significant benefit to you and you are right to rely on it and insist that the faulty workmanship is rectified. It also looks as though you have not paid for it directly and that your insurer has directed you to Autoglass as they are the nominated supplier therefore they are jointly liable for the job as well as if you would have gone to a specailist repairer who knew what they were doing and had a more ethical business model then your job would have been rectified with a smile. I did a similar job for a customer a month ago and I see it as creating goodwill and ensuring people will come back to you year after year and tell their friends about you. You are legally entitled to demand that they rectify their bad repair under the terms of the guarantee and failing that the insurer indemnifies you for that cost. Failing that you are entirtled to ask for your money back ( they currently retail repairs at an eye watering £109 ) and if that doesnt work SUE THEM! and publicise the fact. When we have tried to complain about the poor quality of Autglass repiars to insurers the claims managers simply say "no one has complained" and therefore think that all is well you would be doing them a favour by letting them know that it isnt.

All this "new chip" and "old chip" business is just a red herring. Have you noticed how all roads lead to a new screen? funny that... Autoglass are part of a multi billion dollar company who are very skilled at extracting peoples money.

The practical way.

The actual reason as to why the "pit finish" as we call it, is coming out is as a result of atmospheric and physical wear and most likely the fact that the technicians at Autoglass are not trained correctly to prepare the impact pit properly to make the resin stick to the glass consequently it just falls out as glass is very smooth when it chips and you need to properly abrade the surface to ensure the resin keys to the glass and prime it. To refinsh the pit is a 5 minute job and quite easy if you know what you are doing and if you wanted to drive to N London I could arrange to have it rectified as a goodwill gesture to prove that it is in fact possible to do and to deprive "naughtyglass" of a screen sale that they are trying to make by dubious means.

Specific segments of the U.S. auto industry continue to experience layoffs, despite the relative growth that has resulted in noted economic growth. These may not be glamor elements of the industry, as repo businesses and auto glass repair are among the staggering, but they are an important minority.

I cannot understand recent posts, which merely confuse and obfuscate.

So I think I'll paste my original message, which seems to have got them all worked up.

I don't have a cracked screen at the moment and I don't have an axe to grind either, fortunately.

So verbatim:

Modern glass is very lightweight and cheap, especially in the cheap cars. It gets cracked or dinted very easily.. It's rubbish.

Cue in the glass replacement scam.

I cannot understand the issue at all.

Glass gets chipped/small crack, its part of the joys of motoring. Get it repaired.

Glass has big crack, get it replaced, its part of the joys of motoring. Get it replaced.

Repair fails, get it replaced.

What is the problem. The repairs are free, you pay your excess on a replacement.

Its happened to me, 4 or 5 perpairs one of which failed resulting in a replacement. Pick up phone, sorted.

Takes less time than typing this.

Skidpan +1.

I had a repair carried out, but even before doing it I was advised the screen can break whilst it is done and depending how the chip was caused weaknesses can remain which lead to it failing at a later date. No probs with me, these things happen.

Same from me, +1. I've used Autoglass to repair quite a big chip on my Focus' screen - he took 20 mins and it cost me a tenner; it looked pretty good too. I expect these chips and dinks as part of motoring, especially in view of those terrible winters we had and the amount of roadworks on my commute, with stones flying about.
