Ford Focus - Ford Focus 2002 - Whining Noise, help! - mynamesbuck

Hi all, I have recently bought a 2002 Ford Focus 1.6, petrol, manual transmission with 45k miles. I didn't notice at the time I viewed the car, but a mechanical whine is audble when the engine is idle. The noise goes away when the clutch is pressed. the noise is audible in 1st and 2nd but not in 3rd, 4th or 5th. I have been told that it is the main bearing in the gearbox but I had the gearbox replaced and the noise is still there; either the original diagnosis was incorrect or the garage are telling porkie pies about the work they did (would not be surprising at all given the shocking customer service). Any help in diagnosing this problem would be much appreciated. Cheers!

We had a 2003 Focus and it always had a slight transmission whine at idle when the clutch was not depressed, but this was never evident when the car was driven. If you can hear a transmission wine still at idle and when drive, then it pretty much has to be the gearbox as the diff would only whine when the car was in motion.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Since posting this, I have been told by a reputable source that it could be a worn layshaft but surely this would have been rectified when the gearbox was changed? ...unless of course the work was never done. I think I might have to take it to a Ford dealer to get an answer (although I don't want to).

If it stops when you depress the clutch it will mlost likely be the first motion shaft/primary shaft bearing or possibly the layshaft bearings as those are the only ones moving when you are stationary. You should be able to tell if they have replaced the gearbox by looking at it - it will be clean.
