1997 VW mk3 1.9 TD estate - tyre/road noise - scrumpyjax

I recently had a pair of RUNWAY ENDURO 606 tyres fitted to the front of my old VW. They have done about 1000 miles now but the tyre noise is really loud and seems to be getting worse. I can also feel vibration through the steering wheel. Not the out of balance sort but more of a buzz???---I've checked the wheel bearings and they seem ok.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of problem or got any ideas? .....apart from different tyres.

You have answered your question. You get what you pay for, Runway tyres are known to be very poor in many tests. I wouldn't have them on my car as a gift.

I've also noticed that the tyre noise goes when I'm on twisty roads with decent bends. I suppose this could be tyre deflection or maybe a castor/tracking fault.????

Before you condemn the tyres could you swap front and rear to double check you don't have a failing wheel bearing or similar.

Its not just cheap tyres (if thats the problem), i recently removed a set of Toyo's with over 4mm remaining, road noise and harsh ride became increasingly unbearable, though wet and dry grip and handling superb.

Tyres like the ones you bought are notorious for giving huge probelms and poor grip. The saving are not worth the risk. Get some decent tyres, no need to pay a fortune. Brands like Kumho, Hankook, Toyo are reasonably priced and very nearly as good as Michelin.

I put some Runway tyres on a CLC they are now in the cellar if anybody wants them the reason the road noise was unbearable.

I had 2 replacement front tyres Runway 606 fitted to my Scoda Octavia hatchback 5 months ago. Don,t do much mileage and short trips and seemed okay but did longer A road and motorway trip recently and road noise has got so bad excessive! Wondered if the car but this review explains it. I think they were okay when new but a few months down the line really noisy! Handling seems poor like vague but not noticed any safety issues.

Perhaps I just have to keep to short journeys around town? Or ignor noise until worn down then avoid the brand next time.
