Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CTDi (160) SE - Were my parents-in-law charged a fair price - shooi

Hi, My parents-in-law bought a Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CTDi SE two months ago from our local Vauxhall franchise dealer. The car was registered in July 2011 (11 plate) and had a number of options added (incl 18" alloys, front and rear parking sensors, fog lights, part leather seats etc - still trying to confirm the full list). They were told that it was the car that the MD had been using and that they were being offered it at an "exceptional price" of just short of £20k (£5k deposit, £15k on finance with GMAC). It had done about 9k miles. Two weeks ago my father-in-law passed away unexpectedly. My mother-in-law will never use the car, it's simply too big. We therefore began looking at selling it to pay off the finance, and here is where we've had a bit of a shock. Having checked a number of valuation sites, including this one, it seems that in the two months since the car was purchased, it has dropped in value to the tune of £6-8k, meaning that there doesn't seem to be enough value in the car now to even pay off the finance. We contacted the dealer who told us that they couldn't possibly buy the car back, even at just the price of the finance, because in the last two months the bottom has fallen out of the second hand car market and they have a glut of Insignias that they're having great difficulty shifting. So, would anyone be kind enough to help us with the following questions: 1. Was that a fair price at the time for the car? 2. Is the dealer telling the truth about the bottom falling out of the second hand car market in the last couple of months? 3. Is there anything that we can do other than pay off the finance and then sell the car privately to try to get the most we can for it? We're not expecting special treatment because of Dad and realise that the dealer has no obligation to re-buy the car. At the end of the day, if the car has lost a shed load of value in the last two months, then we'll just have to accept that (and probably steer clear of Vauxhalls in future). Many thanks in advance for any assistance. Phil

First and foremost, Sorry to hear of your loss. Do your best to relieve your mother in law of the extra stress.

The price would have been what a main dealer would charge at the high end. The dealer is telling you the truth about prices, compare on autotrader or somesuch. One choice you have is to simply return the car to the finance company, ask them, and explain. I am sure that GMAC will do their best within their powers, but check the terms and conditions first, it may not be the best option. You could ask the dealer if he will put it on sale for you but basically £15000 is a main dealer price for one of these cars. Sadly you are not alone in this situation, I have seen it too when I worked in switzerland. The insignia is basically a good car, can one of the family buy it, especially if it has the lifetime warranty.

Thanks very much. GMAC basically say that we can either carry on with the payments, pay off the outstanding balance in one go or return the car to them and they will sell it at auction (and then we have to make up any shortfall).
I think paying off GMAC and then trying to sell the car looks our best option.

I'd say the purchase price was at least £5k over the odds.

For £20,000 you can have a brand new one with delivery miles. You should have paid £16-£17,000 for the one your father-in-law bought.

Sorry for your loss.

Hi Shooi,

  1. £20k sounds a bit over the top but was there a PX involved? In which case the PX price may have been OTT as well. At the end of the day, it's somewhat irrelavent now
  2. The bottom hasn't fallen out of the second hand market - the dealer is simply trying to justify why he won't buy the car back at a price you want
  3. This is your best bet

Sorry for your loss
