Toyota Yaris - Should I change locking wheel nuts to normal nuts? - doubletiger

My car is Toyota Yaris, one of tyre had a puncture and need to replace with a new tyre. The garage says my car tyre have locking wheel nuts and need a key to unlock. I purchased the car from brand new and I cannot recall the Toyota dealer gave me a key for wheel nuts. I am considering ask garage to remove all of these locking wheel nuts and replace with normal nuts. if I do, will I get a trouble with car insurance? does it mean this car has been modified? I often see this box when search for insurance quote. Can someone please give me advice? thank you in advance! best regards

Have you checked where the spare wheel is located in the boot? With Toyota alloys, they often put the normal nuts (which have been replaced with the locking nuts) and locking wheelnut socket in a plastic box, and put it with the spare wheel or jack. If you don't find the socket, approach your Toyota dealer to see whether they can supply a spare socket. Otherwise, your garage may have to cut the studs to get your wheels off - which may also damage your alloys.

No need for such drastic action/ Tyre fitters have tools to remove locking wheel nuts: they are also available on ebay

Thank you for inputs!

I may able to find a garage to remove it without demaging, but I am worring about the insurance.

thanks

They can remove them and just buy a set of locking wheel nuts off ebay or something to replace them with.

It's happened to me before, I bought a 2nd hand car and needed to change the tires, but could not the 'key'

Why not just leave the car unlocked and a window open whilst you are at it. The locking nuts are there for a reason and I think your insurance company would expect them to be there. Leaving the insurance aside, how inconvenient would it for you to return to your car one Sunday evening when it's raining to find it standing on bricks?
