VW Passat TDi 170 - Leaking turbo - Slowwww

My Passat is currently at VW Drift Bridge Epsom for a routine cam belt replacement - it's 4 years old and has done 61k miles

The garage has informed me that the turbo is leaking and that it needs replacing - cost £1400 and needless to say I didn't extend the warranty when it expired last April. I have seen no evidence of this as acceleration and MPG have not deteriorated.

At the routine service 3 months or so ago I was told by the same garage that there had been a recall and they had replaced the injectors free of charge - I notice from the invoice that the cost would otherwise have been £970

It might be that I’m being cynical, but do you think that it's possible that the garage somehow damaged the turbo during the fitting of the injectors, or perhaps they're trying to re-coup the money for the injectors (although I assume that they would have been reimbursed by VW for this)

I've asked for them to get the manufacturers comment about whether this is a reasonable life for the turbo in the hope that they will pick up some of the cost of the repair, but I don't hold out much hope and so any additional commentary that I can use against them would be appreciated!

My friends with VWs note the local dealers have a tendency to charge the earth for anything and ..."invent" faults..

What is it supposed to be leaking, oil or air?

I would advise a 2nd opinion first.

Manufactures tend not to look at these things sympathectically these days ! especially as everyone is offered the chance to extend their warranty !

need to establish where its leaking , externally ? or internally ?

I smell a rat.

If your car was not making the demanded boost prssure, the engine management light would be on and a fault code logged. If it runs properly without fault indication then it is almost certainly OK. Any significant boost leak would prevent demanded boost from being achieved.

The VAG on board diagnostics have a tendency to cry wolf(sburg) and will always log a real fault.

I would strongly recommend not giving these people the opportunity to cause real damage if the above obsevations prove to be correct. A good VAG specialist Independent will be more likely to give you an honest appraisal of any problem you might have and also make a proper job of routine work.

You can't be such a cynic if you keep going back there.

Hope you got your car sorted, I have to say I used to use this main dealer but I have found a specialist in Sutton called Volks Autos were all three mechanics used to work at the VW driftbridge and I would not go anywhere else. I had my gearbox ECU condemned by the main dealer but Volks Autos sent it off for repair, instead of trying to sell me a new ECU and I literally paid have what I had been quoted. I think there is some other reviews on this specialist on here, have to say can’t recommend them enough. They will give you an honest opinion rather than trying to up sell you work you don’t need or can wait 6 months for.
