M62 roadworks - Richard M

I need to get across to th A1 from the Manchester area. Normally I would do this on M62 but with the current roadworks I would like to know what the situation is likely to be at approx 7-8 am on a Thursday. The last time I did this it took ages to get through the area around Leeds and this was before any roadworks had started. I imagine it is now considerably worse. The other alternative of the Woodhead pass is again subject to roadworks as far as I know and is slow at the best of times.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best alternative route. I can go further south and use the A50 or use the Buxton / Chesterfield road.

Any up to date info and help would be appreciated.

Where on the A1 are you coming from?

If it's south of the A14 then the A14/M6 looks the best route, using the M6 Toll if you get to Birmingham during the rush "hour" - the A50/M6 is ok but you've still got to get between the A1 and M1 to pick the A50 up.

I am starting south of the Manchester area, so need to know what the current position with regard to roadworks on M62 and Woodhead pass. The alternative is to go either via Buxton/Chesterfield or on A50 to A1 at either Grantham or Newark, unless anyone knows a better way

Sorry - I totally misread your post, in terms of direction.

The A50 is a good road, mostly dual carriageway and when I've been on it fairly free of traffic.

When I go that way, it's usually to Sheffield so I do the A628 off the end of the M67. It's a nice drive going via Buxton though; Peak District Nat. Park. Depends where I was starting - if it's Cheadle/Stockport way then get on the M60 and head onto the M67/A628. If you're more Macclesfield way then maybe the Buxton route or the A50. A50 is quiet and easy to navigate.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know how long it is taking to get through the roadworks on M62 at rush hour?

Delays are running at anything from 15 minutes to 40 minutes. There's been an accident or something this morning as well (Croft interchange). I used to avoid it on my way to work and come of the M6 early, but it even without roadworks the M62 problems would knock on to the M6, sometimes back up to Chorley, and it'd take me another half hour on top of my usual time to get to work.
