Peugeot 206 Alarm - Armitage Shanks{P}
I have just collected an 'X' 206 hdi which is going well but the alarm has gone off twice while it has been parked, in the last week. No windows or doors open, no attempts to break in, a cat might have walked on it but I don't think so! Is this something that a main dealer's computer fault finder might locate or is it a niggly electrical gremlin that I shall have to live with? It is still under warranty but is it curable, in the opinion of other Back-roomers who may have had similar problems with any make of car?

It wasn't raining was it when it went off? My alarm seems to go off in the rain and won't set when the car is wet either. At least mine is still in warranty so I can get them to look at it as it is becoming a nuisance. If not, was it windy and did you leave the heater vents set to open? Some alarms seem to go off if you haven't turned the fan setting down to closed vents and a draught gets in which will set off the ultrasonic thingies.

Most alarms these days have to be properly wired in and don't have the weird current detection devices of the old ones which were really unreliable. I think they also have to reset themselves pretty quickly so they don't cause too much of a nuisance when they do go off for no reason.

If it is still under the warranty then it has to be curable as it is guaranteed to work properly for the duration - if they have to replace parts or the whole thing then that is too bad. Alarms going off for no reason are ultimately a security risk as people aren't going to take any notice if it goes off again when someone is actually trying to steal it. Don't live with it as it as it could annoy you so much that you end up having to leave the alarm off which is when murphy's law comes into play and your car gets stolen. Your insurance company may insist in the small print that all alarms are activated at all times so mention it to the garage if they seem reluctant to deal with the fault. If the garage can't find it then contact a specialist and get the garage to pay for the necessary work after you have given them a couple of attempts to fix it.

Teabelly - thanks for that long and well informed post! My neighbours told me that it went off 3 times on Monday night (I am deaf and didn't hear) and Tuesday (with the vents shut) it went off 3 more times while I was parked during the day. So, it is back to the dealer on Friday. Thanks again for your ideas and I wish you a happy 2003

It's worth checking the bonnet limit switch is well and truly made, had a Primera with that problem after a accident damage repair.
