FIAT Grande Punto - Brakes self - applying during a journey - skidream

For no apparent reason my Grande Punto (1.9 turbo deisal) applies the brakes and stops during journeys. If I turn off the engine and wait 5 or 10 min you can then drive again. Have changed the brake hoses, the Calipers and had it checked on a number of occasions by Fiat and Halfords. No one can find the problem. It is quite an issue as they come on very quickly! Anyone had the problem or can suggest a solution?

Many years ago I experienced an Austin Maxi that did this.

The servo had 'shrunk' due to minor corrosion, effectively making the operating rod that passes through it longer, which was activating the servo and applying the brakes.

Disconnect the brake servo vacuum hose, operate the brake pedal a few times to drain the vacuum reservoir and then try it. BE WARNED, YOU'LL HAVE NO BRAKE SERVO ASSISTANCE.

The Maxi had a screw adjuster in the rod enabling correction.

Let us know what you find.
