Cheap runaround - autobahn

I'm looking to buy a cheap, used runaround that is fun to drive but very economical. My budget is around £2K but could go up a little if required. It needs to be reliable. It does not have to be practical at all but must be good-looking. Any suggestions?

If you find her and she's not too exepnsive let me know where you looked ! especially if she's good looking !

or are we talking cars ? LOL

Must have a GSOH too...LOL.

Must have a Gasket Sited OverHead? That should narrow down the search a bit....

Seriously, at this budget level condition is more important than make or model. If pushed I'd say either a Fiesta (as there are so many to choose from at all price levels) or a Toyota Yaris 1.3 (reliable and better able than most to withstand abuse or neglect by previous owners).

The question is too vague to be answered meaningfully.

'economical' depends on your annual mileage. Cars renowned for being economical such as the Yaris have much stronger residual values than average cars. You can pick up a Focus or Astra or even a Vectra or Mondeo for much less than a small car of similar vintage. If you have a decent insurance record and a low annual mileage, these might be cheaper to buy and run than a small car. 'decent to drive' will depend on the intended duty. Full size cars are horrid to park but make wonderful motorway cruisers.

If you want cheap and cheerful a Chevrolet Matiz c 2005 is hard to beat. Not suited to motorways but easy to park.. and dirt cheap to buy. Lots under 40k miles and well maninatined...

( Unwanted and unfashionable = best value)

Cheap, fun, economical, reliable, good-looking? That's a tall order. A Fiat Panda will fit alot of your criteria. There's a 2 page buying guide in this week's Autocar magazine. Good looking is a matter of personal taste. One man's Angelina Jolie is another's Anne Widdecombe, and vice versa.

Good looking, reasonably cheap, fun? Buy a small Alfa and admire it from the side of the road. Reliable? Something Japanese, petrol. Economical might not be doable unless you're getting a little nippy something.

Look for something well looked after and cheap to fix if it's £2k.

Come to think of it, my own car is probably only worth about £2k now but it's quite large to be a runabout.

Small cars are a false economy, unless you're really rubbish at parking or live up an extremely narrow street then get the most car you can for your money.

Non sequitur. :)

smart roadster.

daveyjp - that's an excellent suggestion. A smart Roadster crossed my mind, but I thought it would be too expensive. However, http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201149433864391/sort/priceasc/usedcars/model/roadster/make/smart/postcode/pl210we/page/1/radius/1500?logcode=p

Its a category D which may be slightly problematic with insurance. Fantastic little motor though.

Don't the small Smarts, including the Roadster, have a rather nasty reputation for blowing engines early doors?

Shame that practical wasn't a factor and good looks was[1]. I'd have suggested a ForFour. I had one as a courtesy car recently and it was exactly like driving a big Go-Kart. Oodles of fun, once I worked out that that Mitsu engine rewards you in spades for caning the living wotsits off it. I think they include a free cheesy grin with each car.

As it was getting on a bit, a garage courtesy car and had probably been thrashed within an inch of its life every day, I guess they're reliable too...;-)

[1] Then again, I quite like 'em. I can see that some wouldn't though.

I'm reminded on another thread how durable the Toyota Corolla is, if you need more room than Fiesta- or Yaris-size.

The people opposite us have an N-registered Corolla (so about 15 years old). Just about every panel is scratched or dented, and there's a sickening crunch when the driver's door is opened and meets the stove-in front wing. But it starts up straight away and the engine and gearbox sound just as new.

Forgive me Avant, I don't think anyone would call a Corolla fun, good looking or very economical. The only fun ones are the GT/GTi, with twin cam 16 valve engines capable of revving to over 7000 rpm. The RWD has quite a cult following, so now quite pricey

A wee Honda Civic: www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/20114342497...p

Still cute to look at, they're apparently quite fun to drive and I can't imagine they're totally rubbish on economy as there's still quite a lot about.

I am looking for a cheap car to run, but I work from home, get shopping delivered and live 5 minutes from the central line in London, with petrol prices as they are I am finding it difficult to decide whether to invest or continue getting a minicab if I need one.
