Great forum..FIRST POST! Hello...

I don't want to make this too long winded so i'll try and summarise..

Basically, I am looking the most RELIABLE recent , lowest miles cheap car available...

Realistically i think i am hoping for an 07 car, low miles (c.25k) at around £2000/£2500..

bear in mind..i'm in Northern Ireland so choice/value is more limited.

EVERY time i start the search Panda comes up ! Even Getz/ignis/ etc fall outside my miles/age/price..

I am considering a panda that is 07, 23k, £2300. I would have bought it if it wasnt for the fact that i have now read about the power steering issue..which the motoring press have never seemed to mention - though lots of forums do,.!!

Is it a COMMON REGUALAR HIGHLY likely to happen problem?

THERE are millions of Pandas in Italy and Poland - THey have the same choices of cars as us - are they mad or just clever?

I dont care WHAT car it is that i end up with..

No other car except panda, sems to offer the age/milage/cost combo i have dreamt up.

Its so difficult becasue Honest JoHn likes the Panda, Warranty Direct put Panda 2nd after Pug 207 for reliabilty (which before you ask seems to be outside my age/milage/cost criteria) , ..

but RAC etc dont even have it on their radar for reliabilty ! - instead its all japanese/korean (which ALSO seem to NOT be availble within my age/milage/cost criteria)

HELP

THANKS

Hi We run two in our family, an 07 1.1 and 08 1.2. We've put 20000 miles on each and no trouble so far ( touchwood!). Brilliant little cars, 50 mpg and peanuts to maintain. I think you are over-worrying. All cars can and do fail, I don't think the power steering pump is a massive issue- as is the case maybe with VW 170 injectors - and in any case it's not the end of the world if it does pack in. Otherwise there's not an awful lot to go wrong, it's an non interference engine, so if the cambelt snaps, there is no major damage done. Parts are cheap and available. Tyres are 40 to 50 quid each, insurance group 1. Ours are 4 years old now and I think we're going to need a new exhaust back box soon ( about £30) and maybe some new bushes/droplinks in a few months - that's it.

Hi thanks !

I thought they were excellent cars as well before i heard of the power steering problem

I know it is east to be swayed by forum hysteria, but i suppose you have to take all the advice and weigh it up..

You see, i have a clio which has developed the 'common problem' with the idle and throttle body..THis common problem has now come to plague me ( i didnt know about the issue in advance). And it does appear to be VERY common.

I was therefore wary of buying another car that has a so called 'common problem' . If it was an ''intermittent problem '' i could accept that you would be unlucky for it to happen rather than ''likely'' for it to happen.

I am aware that all cars are afflicted in some way.. i was just trying to have some damage limitation built into my decision!

But thanks for the feedback

From my frequent reading of the Fiat Forum website the thing most owners agree on is to avoid using the "city"function. This is used to lighten the steering at low (parking) speeds. Possibly this function puts more strain on the power steering pump. By the way,a lot of newer cars use electric power steering pumps,in fact I believe the Vauxhall Corsa D uses an identical pump and system to my Grande Punto.

thats good to know,, i knew about the city button, and thought thats just something else to go wrong!

Is there any way to know that the power steering has a fault or is likely to develop one on a test drive ...i.e. a bad noise, does it only make a noise at full lock etc...

I have had two, 55 Plate Eleganza bought new, traded in 07 for a 100 HP.

Both 100% reliably, nothing broke, fell off, only normal service items.

Cheap as chips to run, apart from the 100 Hp,s fuel consumption ( but i did drive that like i stole it )

If the pump packs up you can get it refurbished, i forget the company, but it has been discussed on the Fiat Forum. Avoid the main dealers; nearly a grand to replace.

thanks for reply..

I'm VERY keen on the panda but i have another issue which may prevent me from buying one.... (discussed in another thread on here regarding only doign low mileage jouneys),

and the consensus of opinion is that Jap engines are better suited to short journey/low miles driving than perhaps a Euro/fiat/pug/renault might be.....

(TO set the scene - i am having trouble with a clio's engine with oil in filter/poor idling etc and am trying to choose a used option with the best possible initial purchse cost/runningcosts/engine reliability that i can for the money.....Mitsubsihi Colt has been suggested.)

Seconded. I've said this before and I'll say it again. My mother-in-law's Daihatsu Cuore does nothing but sit outside on her drive and potter down to the shops occasionally. I doubt it gets properly warmed through most of the time. It's been doing that for over ten years now with no hint of any problems.

But then, being a Japanese "kei" car, that's what it's designed to do.
