Toyota/Yaris D4D - Faulty timing chain tensioner - Peter L C

The chafing noise heard at idling is apparently due to a known fault relating to the chain tensioner. Having no confidence in the local Toyota dealer, I asked a good independent to replace it. He is unable to find any details in order to give me a quote and schedule his work, especially does the engine need to come out. Has anyone experience of this please?

I have a Yaris D4D.

What year is yours?

I have no knowledge of any timing chain/tensioner problems.. the engines are very reliable if serviced properly at regular intervals. Has yours been?

The job looks simple and all details are available of the Toyota Service Information site:

http://www.toyota-tech.eu/SearchPublication.aspx?TYPE=RM

but you have to pay for them.

In my view getting an independent who has never done it before to do it is asking for expensive trouble..

How do you know the tensioner is faulty? What are the symptoms?

Registered 2004 ( 54 ), I became aware of the spurious noise a matter of months after the three year warranty expired. ( About 13000 miles, very few short trips taken ) The Toyota dealer was mystified and contacted Toyota's technical dept. They then told me it was the tensioner which was a known defect and had since been modified, and quoted £600 to change. Agreed it was not urgent, but 2 years later thought it would be better to do it sooner than later. This time the dealer quoted £200! I queried this since I had been told the engine had to come out previously. They said they would come back to me, but did not.. My previous experiences with the workshop manager have all been unfavourable, hence my asking the independent with whom I have complete confidence.

You missed the boat a bit, if your dealer wasn't up to scratch you should have contacted Toyota head office at Epsom when the problem first appeared, Toyota do not leave their customers to fend for themselves once warranty is out, with such a low mileage they'd have fixed it pronto at no cost to you....assuming as Madf mentions the car has been serviced correctly.

Most unusual to find a Toyota dealer's service dept not up to par, hens teeth are more common, contact Toyota customer service enclosing all details, it may not be too late.

Well I did contact Toyota and had no sympathy at all, purely ( they said ) because I had not had the service done by them at the end of the three years, even though it was done to their specification. Not even a contribution was forthcoming. I chose this car because of Toyota's ( then ) reputation for reliability, even though it was the most expensive of my options. Their intransigent attitude has lost them a customer, but they do not seem to care.

So lets get this straight.

You don't get the car serviced by Totota when it's within warranty. They tell you of a problem.. which you ignore.

When you ask them to sort it , the warrnty has expired and you still want them to sort it out. free.

You have a "good" independent garage - (did they service the car?) - who have no idea... of what to do...

And you blame Toyota?

I struggle to think of any car manufacturer who would have much sympathy...

I can only agree with Madf, if you'd had the servicing done by Toyota they'd have stood by their car, that's not wishful thinking it's how Toyota treat their customers.

The irony is that Toyota's main dealer servicing is very reasonably priced.

I hope the OP's garage used Toyota filters.. some cheapies have no non return valve and that will do nasties to bearings on cold starts - and OP does low mileage so all short runs I assume..

I also hope the garage used oil to Toyota specs.

( either of those would invalidate warranty of course)

As I stated above, I am unaware of any tensioner issue on these engines and have driven 100k+ miles ones ( 2003, 2002, and 2005 dates) where the engines were fine...no chain rattle at all.

I only had the service done by the independent when the warranty had expired at end of year 3, and as I said, I have far more trust in the independent

I only know that the Toyota dealer told me that it was a known design fault that had since been modified, but this is the dealer that supplied the car, having presumably done a PDI, with front/rear tyre pressures interchanged. They subsequently quoted me £600 for doing the work, then two years later, £200. Do you wonder why I have little faith in their integrity? My original question was about the procedure for replacing the tensioner. Since this is a site for Technical Matters, perhaps some people would be good enough to refrain from critisizing me for what I may or may not have done in the past.
