Ford Focus - Keeping Used Tyres with 5mm Tread - Worth doing? - Focushing

I bought a Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 (Petrol) [ Registered September 2008] in September 2009 and was pleased with the deal at the time apart from the fact that I didn't like the Hankook Tyres it was fitted with. I was suspicious as to why a 10 month old car did not have the original tyres because Ford always fitted the more well known brands ( Michelin etc.) on previous Ford's I've bought new and 2nd hand. Anyway, although it's irrational I was never happy with the tyres from Day 1. Experience has not improved my opinion as I find them noisy, poor round corners and were absolutely dreadful in the last 2 north -east winters [ It's grim up north :-) ]

The car is due an MOT this year and the front tyres are below 3mm in some places so I've decided to change the whole lot. However, the rear tyres still have a minimum of 5mm overall and, despite what I say above, it seems criminal to let the garage dispose of them or, even worse, charge me to dispose of them then sell them to someone else. I believe tyres will deterioate over time but was wondering whether they are worth keeping as emergency replacements if I got a puncture.?

If not, is there a legitimate way to sell them on to somebody or is there any other sensible suggestions rather than just disposing of them/ giving them to a garage to sell on.

I know some people are going to defend Hankooks . Don't bother please I just don't like this particular set and have never felt safe when driving as I did with my previous Focus fitted with Conti Sport Contact 2. As I say irrational - but that's how i feel.

Some Mondeos came with Hankook Ventus as OEM fit.

Ford and VW now fit Hankooks as OEM. Put the ones with most tread left on e-bay.

I'd swap front to back and live with them for the few mon ths it will take them to get to 3mm then swap all four.

Can't say I'm too enamoured to hear Ford fit Hankooks as OEM. After trawling loads of websites it appears Hankooks are well rated but sorry, for the reasons posted previously, not for me thanks. You will appreciate that I won't be taking up your suggestion of swopping front with back daveyjp. I'm going for 4 new ones now.

Thought about selling them on e-bay but can't see anyone travelling long distance to pick up two 2nd hand tyres and I aint posting them! Might try it just to see if there's any local interest.

Thanks for all your input folks, your info has been most helpful.

What have you got to lose sticking them on ebay. Have a look how much two tyres with 5mm of tread go for on there. Yours will be a popular size, so there will be takers. As for not wanting to post them, why not? Courier firms will not charge very much and you are likely to get a better price.

The recession may be passing you by, however there are plenty of people out there who are having to save money any way they can. If it helps, why not sell the tyres and donate the proceeds to charity.

My own experience of far eastern tyres was similiar, but the road noise is part of the equation, you won't find a quiet cheap tyre. tyres for my car are about £60 budget and £120-150 for what i would like, but as my car seems to be on course for 15000 approx mile tyre changes I'll stick with the budget makes. the car is capable (allegedly) of 120 mph, but it doesn't go much north of 70 nowadays. If I had an out and out high performer i'd be a bit pickier, but for a diesel engined chevrolet budget will do.

If you don't "feel safe" in your car on those tyres you won't be, so bite the bullet and put 4 new tyres on that you have confidence in.

Happy motoring!

I too share your suspicion of far Eastern tyres, however Hankook are respectable and are OEM on many Fords now, no Western car maker would fit dodgy tyres as original equipment. Also, I have used Falken tyres on my Audi which were great.

Some on the lesser known Chinese brands however are rubbish and go out of shape before they even wear out, eg Fullway, Goodride, Linlong etc etc.

I thought most of the rollover problems were ultimately attributed to driver error. It wouldn't be the first time NHTSA started shooting from the hip. The Audi 5000 was wrongly panned for being prone to causing unintended acceleration-as was the Toyota Prius. Toyota, wrongly IMO, engaged in a grovelling exercise, rather than fighting the unfounded allegations.

At the recommended (by Firestone) tyre pressures the Explorer failed the roll over test, so Ford reduced the tyre pressres to make the car slide rather than roll (Mercedes pulled a similar trick fitting concrete tyres and standard ESP to the A-Class for the same reason) Firestone were worried about heat build up at the pressures Ford recommended and protested (internally) to Ford. Ford said do you want to supply us as OEM suppliers or not? Firestone kept schtum. Given the already under inflated tyres it didn't take much neglect to end up with dangerously under-inflated tyres. Indeed some blow-outs were noted on recently serviced cars were thought to be at or near as damn it the Ford recommended pressure. Ford were in the wrong for launching a dud product, Firestone were in the wrong for letting Ford do what they did. 50+ people died as a result. I am a fan of modern Fords but they got this very, very wrong.

I'll admit you got me there. But this was an isolated case with a particular type of tyre, and questionable driver practice and car design.

Mercedes fitted tyre that was far too hard to the series one A-class increasing stopping distances drastically and reducing lateral grip dramatically - which was the point - the car rolled too easily with suitably sticky tyres fitted. A pish-poor product fitted with the wrong tyres intentionally and sold at a premium - ahhh that nice shiny star on the bonnet eh...

I wouldn't bother. You're getting new tyres of your choice. Just give over the Hankooks when you have the new ones fitted.

Apart from that, Hankooks get a good write up in the motoring press. I was thinking about fitting them to my Focus. I have Pirellis at moment.
