Hyundai ix35 v Renault Scenic - InAQuandry

I am looking to buy a new car for September and have narrowed it down to these 2. The Hyundai is 1.7Diesel 2WD and the Renault is the new 1.6 Diesel engine. I have owned Renaults for the last 5 cars but have never had a Hyundai. If anyone has anything to say about either of these 2 I would be grateful as I need to make a decision!!

I ran a 2.0 Diesel IX35 for a year and was very happy with it. Much better than my 2006 Renault Megane that I had for a while. It spent more time in the garage than the road. Mostly electrical problems and bits of trim.

No choice here, I fear...

Odd choice to compare?

They aren't the same sort of vehicle so i'm unsure how you came to the conclussion of it was one of these. Personally i'd have the hyundai as i dislike MPV's (after owning one).

Why do you think they're so different? Similar style, same no of seats virtually the same size, price engine etc.

Ones an SUV all be it a 2wd model. The other is an MPV and is designed to have cubby holes and "clever" bits for family life.

They will both ride and drive totally differently. The hyundai is probably a good 6 to 8 inches higher i'd imagine.

You wouldn't look in something like whatcar / auto car and see these two as bed fellows / natural rivals.

The IX35 would probably be compared against something like a Mitsu ASX or a Qashqai or possibly a skoda yeti.

The scenic i'd guess is up against a meriva/zafira/touran although i'd be hard pushed to seperate it from something like a normal focus and/or golf.

I'd still have the Hyundai however you want to think about it :-)

Thanks for the info. I've never really understood the different labels applied to cars which look the same. As long as it has a wheel at each corner, gets me from A to B without too much fuss and has room for the OH's fishing tackle that's all we really need to know. Incidentally we had already dismissed the Qhasqai (too plastic y), the Mits ASX (I love it and want one but too expensive), Vauxhall (coz they're Vauxhall!) and VW (Expensive on parts). The last 2 makes we have owned way back. I am tempted by the Hyundai but the deals on Renault make them hard to ignore and yes I do think that 12 years with the same manufacturer is long enough - hence my user name!!

Thanks to you both. :)

But there's the rub. I have owned Renaults for the last 12 years and apart from one 'Friday afternoon car' they have all been faultless. Even the one with problems was sorted quickly by importing a technician from France as the fault was so rare!

Same make of car for 12 years ? Deffo time for a change then, I buy new every 12-18 months and never bought from the same manufacturer twice in a row.

Life's too short and there's too many cars to try.

having just got rid of a Peugot 3008 for a Hyundai I can only say that my new purchase is the only car I've had that is actually living up to its billing after 3 weeks I'm already getting 53 mpg (1.4 diesel)

So I would trust what claims are being made by Hyundai

I wouldn't trust any figures given by the manufacturers. Just nip along to the owners forums and take a look, or even have a peek at the Real Life mpg charts on this site.

My IX35 was advertised as being capable of almost 50mpg, the most I ever saw was 42, most of the time it was 38ish. Just bought a Juke and that should be giving me 55+, first tankful was 42.

New euro V regs are to blame, they're just strangling the engines in an attempt to make them a bit cleaner..

As others have said - a slightly odd comaparison on these two different vehicles. I was running a 1.7crdi ix35 until last week; excellent vehicle! Now running a 2.0 crdi 4wd ix35. Showing signs of being an even more excellent vehicle! look carefully at what you want from you car. "Brand loyalty" is for those who like to buy badges, not cars (eg BMW Merc)! Don't be afraid to move away from Renault. Why not look at estaes & hatchbacks? Try Skoda Octavia; Kia Ceed SW (my daughter runs a 3 year old diesel - superb!) Hyundai i30 (voted best car in europe by german public!). All these sort of options give you good cars at prices that VW, Ford, Vauxhall, BMW etc. can only dream of for a similar spec - and quality is good. Check that out on the Which? site. Good Luck!

the ix35 is a good car, i have the 1.7 premium with both packs, its averaging 49 mpg at 70mph,its good to drive and the extras are far superior to anything renault can come up with.

i used to have a laguna that i liked a lot but it developed to many problems, not 1 issue with the ix 35.

go for it

Reliable Car, VFM, loaded with kit v Badly made duffer?

The only problem with a Hyundai IX35 is getting delivery as they've been in short supply since launch - apart from that it's a no-brainer compared to the Renault.

Other more expensive models might make the choice more difficult but not from your shortlist.
