Gard X protection - Honda - any good? - Sulphur Man

Hi,

We've just purchased a used Honda FR-V from Honda Chiswick. Very happy with the purchase and the car itself.

As is the way these days, there's a variety of ownership packages we could take up, including a Gard-X protection lacquer on the car exterior and interior (it's EX-spec with leather seats). Is this worth having? Honda are pushing quite hard, offering it at £300 instead of £375. The car will get it's fair share of interior abuse from two small children.

Keep the money in your pocket there is 295 profit for them if you go ahead. You are much better of with a good polish and do it yourself.

295 profit for them

Not at £375 retail, given there is £62.50 VAT, but you are correct in principle - most of the money paid by the customer goes to dealer profit.

On the other hand, at the right price they are very good products:- the paint protection does protect the car & the interior protects the seats & carpets.

However I'm pretty sure it does NOT work with leather

The cheapest option is to look on e-bay. These packs are generally held in the dealer valleting bay; the valleters apply only 1 pack per 2 cars, half-inches the 2nd pack & sells it on e-bay for a fraction of the dealer price. Ok you apply it yourself but it's a doddle.

If you want the dealer to apply it (thus with a guarantee) offer £150 incl VAT - they are still making about £40

That is pretty expensive for what is basically normal polish stuff. Got a mate that does valeting and he says it's a complete con.

Sunwins in Preston tried to sell Mr Bobbin some 'Diamond-shine' or some such to keep his Celica looking shiny. We turned it down because it was something like £900 apparently! Yeah right!

Is that like Diamondbrite? when I bought my new Note last year the sales bod let slip that Diamondbrite was rubbish and removed the first time you took the car into a car wash. Since we had bought it some years ago on my Xtrail I knew that was the case anyway.

His new product 'Super-whizzo-gleamy-shiny-shine' was great and only £500. I politely told him no thank you. Fully intending to think about Autoglym. Given that my Note is always parked up garaged or under cover the paintwork even though it's red is fine so far.

Now I happen to have some left over Diamondbrite in my garage. If I can be bothered is Diamondbrite the stuff to use or Autoglym Super Resin (both of which I happen to have) or should I spend the 20 quid and buy some GardX on Fleabay -because thats all it is. Is GardX easy to apply?

Given it's a Red metallic should I do anything to it at all?

Autoglym Super Resin, then buff off and apply Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection. Brilliant results, I've used the stuff for years. Wouldn't touch anything else

As far as I can tell, looking at the ingredients, they are all just waxy goop - a lot of them are made from ethanediol aka anti-freeze. I tend to use Autoglym as it isn't streaky, but I've also had some car polish from Asda that made the car look very nice. You're only waxing the top urethane coat anyway.

Just keeping it clean and always washing bird muck off it will probably help it stay nice.

It's an offence to drive around in a dirty vehicle in Belarus, in case anyone is going to do that. Ridiculous fact of the day.

Yep Autoglym is pretty much tops as I figured. Oh I'm paranoid about bird splatter. Autoglym do a packet of moist wipes for that.

Autoglym Bumper care. Works really well on your Glass Fibre Front Doors/ Garage doors and Upvc double glazing frames. Brings them up like new. I also happen to like the Glass Polish too especially on windscreens. Makes removing the dried dead bugs much easier...imo.

Ooh thank you for that! Didn't know it'd work on house windows nicely!
