Car park charges only ever go up. However, I recently came across what is the biggest percentage increase I have ever seen. Luton and Dunstable Hospital have increased their minimum charge from £2-50 for 5 hours to £4 for 3 hours. This is an increase of over 100% for those who can often least afford it! Has anyone seen greater?

My local hospital made £1.3million from car park charges last year. They claim it all goes into running the car park and not for profit but if thats true then they're overpaying for that service.

There is a hospital at Sutton that charges £2.00 per hour car parking and you have to prepay. So you have a wild guess at how long you will be waiting to be seen and then rush out and stick more money in if it exceeds your estimate. A real money earner.

In God's own country parking @ hospitals is free with IIRC 2 x exceptions - Edinburgh RI (PFI) and Dundee Ninewells - car parks operated by outside owner.

If the hospital car park is operated by a private company the way round this is to pay the minimum at the time you park.

If you get an "unenforceable invoice" (the scammers will call it a PCN just to make you think it's a legit parking ticket) for staying over the time you can either ignore it completely, or offer them compensation for their loss - which is what it would have cost for the extra time you were over the time you paid for.

You could even buy a ticket when you leave for the extra time and use this as evidence that you did pay for the amount of time you were parked.

Paying for parking is a pet hate of mine. I'd rather walk quite a long way so I can park for free.

After paying parking charges for over a month visiting a sick relative we mentioned in passing to the ward sister (sorry manager!) about the cost of parking. "Oh I can give you a form to get in for nothing" she said. No mention of that on any posters or information leaflets, and no offer of a refund either.
