Right folks, need the collective forum brain on this one!

Bought a car 2 weeks ago, and someone in their wisdom decided to apply either intentionally or not, wax or polish to the windscreen! (before my purchase) - looks maybe like an accidental runoff ?

Anyway, every time the wipers wipe I see a "scum" on the windscreen, but after the wipe the screen is clear. my problem is that whenever the wipers are on constantly this "scum" is there, and it would worry me if it was raining at night and my vision would be affected.

I have tried household glass cleaner, water and vinegar, cleaning with newspapers. Bought some foamy type stuff "that will clear anything" according to the chap in the motor factors. (have bad news for you buddy !). Got some stuff off the chaps at Autoglass, have even tried the old trick of the potato cut in half smeared over the screen, all to no avail !!!

Apparently nail varnish remover (or something with Acetone) may lift it. Unfortuneately the only nail varnish remover in our house is acetone-free!!! aargh!!! have to hunt some out.

Does anyone else have any tips worth considering ? Before I accidentally hit the screen causing that nice young chap from Autoglass to replace it!!!
(Its not the wiper blades themselves either - have changed those)

Its a real pet hate of mine having a screen which isnt clear!

Have you got any really strong anti bacterial cleaner? Dettol 4 in 1 for example, and some meaty kitchen towel, like Bounty or whatever its called now.

Give that a go. Worked wonders on my glasses when i got some T Cut on them.

And dont forget to clean the blades themselves as well. :)

Smeary windscreens do make driving tedious. You've tried pretty hard to clear this problem but I'll suggest the one that works for me. A proper chamois-and rub hard-REALLY hard. It's the only way I can get a clear windscreen.

This may sound daft but have you tried using toothpaste or cream cleaner (Cif etc).

Put a generous dollop on a sponge and very lightly with plenty of clean cold water just wipe it over a couple of times.

I use it to clear the baked on dead bugs etc. Fastest thing ever and (if your using Colgate) leaves your screen with that minty fresh smile.!

Cellulose paint thinner is your friend here. Comes in big tins cheap rather than in little bottles priced as cosmetics too. Less painful on the jolly old wallet when it comes to sloshing it liberally onto a rag.

Also worth a try is lighter fluid (the stuff you put in Zippo lighters), that removes all sorts of crud.

In this part of the world, when you stick you car through the car wash they give you a little packet containing a tissue thingy impregnated with something that removes car wax like magic (nose says mostly alcohol with some other unidentifiable smelly bits thrown in). The idea is that since the wax function of the wash is an "all over" deal, you need something to get the wax off the screen afterwards to make the wipers work. Works a treat too. I wonder if these are available in Britain? They come in foil envelopes containing two tissues, a "wet" one and a plain one to clean up with.

This is a subject thats been bugging me for weeks also.

Every time I think Ive found the magic bullet I get back to square 1 so here are my views as follows :-

Good hard dry newspaper wipe of a slighltly damp screen - pretty good

Household amonia wipe of screen - reasonable

Acetone wipe - very good but be carefull of the paintwork as there are no second chances.

Detergents including pressure washer stuff - waste of time largely

CIF cream or similar - okayish

Jewellers rouge past - pretty good

Meths - left rainbowy smears

New windscreen - priceless !!

New wiper blades help. They perish fairly quickly.

Are you washing the car with normal washnwax between times?...if so when you do wash it keep it off the screen. Is the screen peppared with minute stonechips, if it is you are flogging a dead horse.

I use Lidl's 1:100 screenwash, 500ml bottles apple and lemon flavour, both in the washer bottle and as a window and wiper blade washing solution (brilliant for house windows too), keeps this film at bay when it rains.

"New wiper blades help. They perish fairly quickly."

You must be using old fashioned rubber blades as flat blades seem to last two to three years with retrofit versions now available for older models. Try Wiperblades.co.uk
