50cc Moped - Can I do a motorbike test on a moped? - Chris S

I have a full car licence obtained in 1985 which is also a full moped licence.

I was thinking of buying a moped and using it to do my motorbike CBT and training. I'd be able to ride the bike to the CBT site and save the cost of hiring one. (I want to do the CBT even if I don't have to)

Is there anything in the law to stop me from doing a motorbike test on a 50cc moped?

If not could I fail on a technicality such as doing 30mph in a 45mph limit?

Have a look at www.motorcycle.co.uk/getdoc/b464be52-72b4-4044-9be...x

A full moped licence automatically gives you a motorcycle provisional but you must be over 17.

A CBT obtained on a moped is also valid for motorcycle (at 17 yrs. old).

What an excellent idea to do a CBT test if you are going to get a moped and you will save the cost of hire and also get some useful experience on the machine you will be riding. Just choose your CBT training school carefully as there are a lot about and the standards can vary.

Nothing in law stating that you cannot take a motorbike test on a moped but you will only end up with a moped entitlement on yor licence, which you have already got.

Nothing in the driving test about not getting to the speed limit, so 30 in a 40/50mph limit shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck with the biking

Even though I'm not a biker, it's interesting what you said Cris about not getting to the speed limit.

I was given a negative mark on my Bus Driving test when I did 40 in a 50mph area. The examiner said I wasn't driving at a speed appropriate to the road. I suppose you could be considered to be causing an obstruction on the public highway if you don't keep speed up significantly closer to the speed limit, even if the letter of the law says you are not actually speeding. The only occasion that I was breathalysed was when police stopped me for driving TOO SLOWLY on one December evening as I was trying to spot a certain street. They said that when they see a vehicle going particularly slowly on an ordinary road they are suspicious that the driver might be sleepily drunk!

I'm pleased to say that the breathalyser test was totally clear and they then helped me find where I was looking for. As for the bus license I passed the test. The examiner just wanted to make the point of encouraging driving with common sense!

50cc Moped - Can I do a motorbike test on a moped? - Philonline

Isnt that strange, Ive been looking for the same answer, at the age of 49 I have got shot of the car and gone onto two wheels with a little 50cc scooter, but due to my age and having the grandad privaliges of riding a moped as a full licence holder was looking to take my full bike test on it, but it looks like I can not do it this way and save some cash !

I wonder, is it also the same if the 50cc scooter or moped is unrestricted ?

A moped is defined as having a cylinder capacity of less than 50cc and a top speed of 30 mph. unless you get a pre 1977 model where the law stated less than 50cc and had to be capable of being pedalled. The law changed when so called mopeds were capable of going at 50-60 mph and were ridden by 16 year olds who normally stuffed them in the nearest hedge or killed themselves. I was one of those, although I did manage to avoid the hedges but had a few scary moments but am still alive, but at 16 riding a Yamaha FS1E at 50 mph was great fun.

So if your 50cc scooter is defined in law as a moped, then you have a full licence for that class of vehicle and cannot take another test. However if it is a motorcycle I suppose you could take your test and get a full A1 motorcycle licence which would let you ride upto 125cc and i think 12bhp machine as a full licence holder.
