how can insurance companies tell whether you've got points on your licence or not?? that is current insurers and any new ones you'd wish to start a policy with, also how can they tell whether you've had any accidents or not. I'll be honest I've had a few accidents in the past year or so,but they've been really minor like reversing into cars and causing slightly crumpled doors etc! I've always contacted the vehicle owner right away, looking back I wished I just paid for repairs out of my own pocket, what is the point of insurance if you can't claim on it? b***** leeches. my first year of van driving - no rear view mirror! sorry if I sound irresponsible,I'm almost used to driving a van now. Obviously time has come to renew my insurance, but I don't want it to put me out of business! currently paying a reasonable £1,200,but the only quote I've got so far has been £10,000! Something I will simply have to pay,but goodbye to any decent profits this year, and maybe next?

First move I would suggest is to use a cost comparison website. There are plenty out there. We did that for car insurance when my wife's car insurance renewal came up at DOUBLE the previous year despite a clean record on our part. Like you say, the leeches are out there just to pay their bosses whopping bonuses while they parasite themselves off us. Fight on brother and you'll make it! Good Luck!

just had my renewal, they want 3x as much!! £3,000++ mind you I did have 2 claims, still beats £10,000!! bit of relief actually.....but yes all insurance companies are parasites, thats why I only have insurances which are required by law,no home insurance, life insurance, pension,I'll be dead by retirement age,as they'll have increased it to 80 by then!

Maybe you consider them parasites, but, you have an increased premium because you are a big risk, you have made claims, tthey have had to pay out, therefore your premium increases, and quite right too, if you don't think your premium should increase, who do you think should pay for your carelessness, me?, other careful drivers? - why should we pay more?

Maybe it would be best if your renewal was 10k, then you wouldn't be driving a van that you keep hitting other vehicles with!

I'm not a huge fan of insurance companies but in your case you have caused your own problems not the insurance companies. You have admitted that you have caused the accidents so the increase in premiums is down to your poor driving - not the insurance companies being parasites.

Do you not expect your premiums to go up after making two claims? If you are stuggling with driving the van why not get some van training rather than causing other people problems?

Absolutely your choice in a free society. I take it you are 20 something, perhaps living at home with no dependants? Maybe when your business takes off and you are making good money, you will have a home with nice things which you will be proud to own. If some low life breaks in and nicks them, you will be happy to just work a bit harder to replace them. If you have children, you won't mind them being destitute because you didn't plan for your untimely early death. And when you reach retirement, you won't mind living in poverty as you didn't plan for the day. All perfectly OK in a free society.........

No need to wish an early death on anyone! LOL

Thats just mean. Touch wood everybody.

I really wasn't wishing anyone an early death, just pointing out that we don't know what is around the corner. Some people plan for the unexpected by insuring and others taking the risk.

I am surprised though that the OP is forty something, as I would have thought that he would have known how unfair life can be and learnt to drive a van more carefully i.e. know the consequences of getting it wrong.

i know theres so much that can go wrong isn't there??? step outside your front door and you could get knifed by a hoodie, better stay in eh?? and no I'm forty, but haven't succumbed to slow death just yet.....

true,it was my inexpericence that caused the accidents,my main miff is that I just wished I paid for the repairs myself, rather than my insurance increase threefold, thats the point with car/van insurance, nobody wants to actually claim on it! they (the insurance companies) have got it made.

I can see why premiums rise if claims are made but i think an increase like that deterrs people from using insurance, encourages people to drive without and makes driving prohibitive. And yes they do have it made. Anybody who earns money from something that people have no choice but to buy, always has it made. Same with water companies, oil companies etc.

Ive always said its much harder to sell Coca Cola than to sell petrol. Because people have no choice but to buy petrol.

That is a big increase Mike.Insurance companies are there to make money. I know my brother worked in the insurance bussiness for years and was never short of a penny.

He always advised me take the minimal cover you can get away with. The problem in the UK due to the sky high premiums some people have to pay, they drive without insurance and take their changes which cost the people who are insured.

hopefully my business will be more than able to absorb it,but I'd never drive uninsured - I've have a nervous breakdown!
