Garage Floor - Ian91

Our garage floor is quite worn and dusty, currently a 4" thick concrete base and we are having the garage replaced, it has been suggested to use a asphalt screed @ 1/2" (hard asphalt) to provide a hard dust free surface for the car. Has anyone had this done on their garage floor?

The other alternative would be to put a concrete screed of about 2" but this would leave a high lip where you drive in to the garage

will it not soften if oil or petrol/diesel drips on it ?

I normal grind off the top surface of concrete and use quality floor paint, gray, normally a resin paint. This seals the floor and looks good.

The surface sets hard, a bit like rock, I don't think it will soften but it will crack if you hit it very hard with a lump hammer, the current surface is quite badly pitted and worn and this seems the best solution at the moment as it also stops damp.

B&Q -International Paints - Garage floor paint. Comes in lots of colours but I used Grey.

Fuel and oil resistant lasts years. Bare concrete - didn't need primer or screed or anything other than a good sweep to clear up the leaves etc. Mine was done ten years ago still looks OK.

Sweep - apply sealant - apply floor paint.

It takes a while but it's worth it, I did mine a few years ago and it's still good.

I have used Johnsons Floor-tred floor paint for thirty years without complaint. It is also used by many F1 teams to paint the garage floors at many F1 circuits. I buy mine online from Decorating warehouse. Its almost half the price that it is in the high street.

turbo11,

The Johnsons floor - tred could be an option if I use a concrete screed, do you use the the garage for your car - just wondered how it wears with daily use? The Decorating warehouse website shows a couple of different types would you know the exact type. The floor is painted at the moment but because of the wear to the concrete base this has flaked and now looks a bit rough.

Hi Ian. No, my garage is full of the usual garden machinery, kids bikes,Tool cabinets,Toolchests and a large workbench!. I have used the standard and the two pack flor tred. My current garage has the standard down(dark grey), and is fine for foot traffic, but does chip off if you drop spades, garden forks etc on it.You could use the same, but I would also park your car, positioning all four tyres on a carpet tile each. My father in law does this in his double garage as it stops the warm tyres from sticking to the paint and pulling it off. The carpet tiles are stuck down with decent double sided tape.

It seems a good idea parking on bits of carpet. When I used International floor paint, (and closely following the instructions), the tyres stuck to the paint, pulling it off.

I had/have the same problem with International Paint. Tyres take it off.

It's carp.

I agree. I applied sealant and floor paint and after that it looks like just a new garage floor. try it out.
