BMW 330D Saloon (E90) - Buying advice needed - Aliray

Am looking at buying a 2006-2008 BMW 330D Saloon. I have been unfortunate to have bought two complete lemons recently which have ended up costing me thousands of pounds in repairs (Audi A6 Allroad being my biggest mistake by far!!).

As I see it, I can either;

1) Buy from a BMW approved used dealer at an inflated price but with a decent warranty

2) Buy from a random dealer which will obviously come without a decent warranty at a better price

As I am really reluctant to shell out for further repairs, what is my best option?? Are the after market warranties (such as Warrantywise) any good? Is it worth paying £170 for an RAC inspection to mitigate against buying yet another lemon?

Any helpful buying advice would be much appreciated

I suggest buying from a BMW dealer. This need not be that much more expensive than another dealer if you shop around on the BMW national website. If you find a few possible cars, phone the dealers and negotiate - you have only wasted a couple of minutes if they say no. They will generally accept a small deposit which to hold the car, which will be refunded if you find something wrong when you inspect it. A 2006-2008 AUC should be virtually unmarked.

The advantage of buying from BMW are when you find some faults, and there will be some, you can use your local BMW dealer to fix them under warranty, and secondly if the car should turn out to be misdescribed (crashed,clocked, outstanding finance....) you are completely protected.

Bear in mind that despite all the advertising, the AUC check isn't real - they just wash and vacuum the car and touch up any obvious scratches. The quality control is left up to the buyer. That's not a big problem though as they should fix any faults under warranty. Just make sure you get them to fix everything, as once the car is out of warranty, BMW have become much less helpful of late....

I would also buy from the dealer too as the warranty might cover more items than a aftermarket warranty. Paying the extra is probably worth it even though the 330d is a great car.

Before you buy a BMW diesel I suggest you look on one of the forums and look at swirl flaps they have a habit of turning a lovely shiney car into a piece of scrap.

A 2006 - 2008 330d that the OP is considering is less prone to this problem than earlier cars. I think this affected the E46 a lot more than the E90 as BMW addressed the problem, even if it isn't entirely solved. Still worth considering though...

They replaced the metal riveted flaps with plastic which are proving to be worse than the original metal ones the only sure way is to remove them not a difficult process.If you live on Germany as I do you will have noticed that BMW came well down on the ADAC list of the most reliable cars.Both myself and my son own BMW's as well as other cars nice to drive but not a lot better than many cheaper cars.

Andy - I agree with you that BMW are pretty average for reliability these days. It mattered less a few years ago when they would honour goodwill claims for failures that were out of warranty, but still considered premature. Sadly BMW are much less generous these days, along with quite a few other manufacturers. My main car is an Audi currently, although it's about time for a replacement. I don't think I'll look at BMW this time, even though they are fun to drive.

Thanks Andy and Steve, that's very helpful. Forgive my ignorance but what are swirl flaps? Couldn't find a thread relating to it?....

Done my reading, know what they are now (roughly). Is it worth replacing them as soon as I buy the car on a 2007 model then? I have seen they only cost a few quid on ebay and you can do the entire job for about £200. Seems a sensible measure to prevent having to replace the engine.....

Aliray, I guess I should defer to Andy to answer that question as he seems to have more current knowledge of the problem. If you do end up buying from a BMW dealer, then you should wait 11.5 months before doing anything to rectify the problem as the warranty will cover you and replace the engine if necessary.
