Last week I started to develop a clutch problem - then when just driving it a 100yds down the road the transmission light came on and lots of white smoke out the back and loss of power - I assume this is separated to the clutch issue - the engine seems to be 'missing' thought timing belt may have slipped but this is all ok.....Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like a turbo problem not what you want before christmas.

Is this an XUD engine or similar? If its a purely mechanical one - throttle cable to the pump then its either got to be pump timing or a loss of compression, although this is not likely to happen suddenly. If it has electronic control one of the injectors will have a sensor with a wire connected to it, check the connection, if that's OK the injector could be faulty.

Most Peugeot's had changed to the 2.0. Hdi engine by '03 but I think yours may be a 1.9, in which case its probably the DW3 engine, similar to but later than the XUD, in which case I think it has electronic control of the pump, check the injectors and see if it has a wire connected to one of them.

cheers pete - i will check it out - so if its got a wire and the connections ok i assume its a case of checking the injectors?

There will only be a wire on one injector (typo in previous post) so that is probably the only one that will need replacing, but its the dearest one of course! You can check it by measuring the resistance to earth, can't remember exactly what it shold be but I would think a hundred ohms or two, that of course on checks its continuity not necessaraly that its working. You could try disconnecting the wire and see if it makes any difference.

had the injectors checked - all are fine

any other ideas anyone?

I think then your first suspicion may have been correct and the belt has slipped, retarded timing will give you blueish/white smoke, lack of power and erratic running.

Pete had the timing all checked and is fine
