I bought a 9 month-old Modeo Zetec in July and been very pleased with it.

One marginal reason for getting it was the Ford heated screen. I had no reason to use it until a few weeks ago , and then found it was clearing only one side ( passenger). So I took it to my local Ford dealer and requested a fix under warranty. They diagnosed a blown fuse, which is not covered, and I had to pay £33.

When the current cold snap started I used it again, only to find the same problem. Back to the Ford dealer, who spent time testing all the electrics, and said a new screen was needed. However because of a tiny stone chip ( not near the element) they thought Ford would refuse it and I had to go through a rigmarole of speaking to Ford customer service, getting photos of the windscreen, etc.

Now the Ford dealer has realised the screen is not a Ford screen.Presumably it was replaced during the first few months and the windscreen co fitted a Pilkingtons, not Ford, screen. So there is no possibility of Ford covering it under warranty.

So I have now gone back to the supplying garage, who, to their credit, are arranging a new Ford screen for me.

So a word of warning- if you have a broken Ford screen, tell the windscreen replacer you must have a Ford screen, not a generic.

These screens , I understand, can cost over £500.

Windscreens are not usually covered under warranty.

Generally most insurance companies give you windscreen cover if you have fully comprehensive insurance. Have a look through your insurance policy booklet, most insurance companies have a 'dedicated' windscreen company that they tell you to use. You will have to pay an excess for having a replacement screen.

Unfortunately, the heating elements in these screens 'burn out' over time, I have the same thing with a MK3 Mondeo, it has also started to fail on the drivers side.

We had our heated screen replaced on our Galaxy just before the 3 yr warranty was up. The problem with ours was that there were two lines not clearing on the drivers side. The rest was ok. Told it was a faulty screen and it was replaced free of charge at the local Ford dealer. We also had a small stone chip but was away from the faulty area and did not touch any of the elements. So yes they are covered under warranty.

our Galaxy in its 13th year ( & throught the MOT today) is still on the heated screen fitted when she was about 6 months old.

It still works too & I use it quite a bit since the A/C has not worked for 7 or 8 years.

Yes the heated windscreen is s great idea.

It is covered by the warranty, but there are special conditions on it. In this case, as I have discovered, this screen is not a Ford original- so if your car is under warranty, the point is to tell the windscreen replacement people that you must have a Ford branded screen.

The windscreen cover on the insurance policy only kicks in if the windscreen is broken, not just if the heater element is not working.Replacing it yourself sets you up for a bill of hundreds of pounds.

While waiting at the dealers I spoke with a Focus wonder who said he has had 3 screens in his car because of the same problem.

This saga continues.

I had a new, Ford badged, heated screen fitted. We all assumed that had fixed the problem.

A week or so later, a frosty morning is my first chance to use it. The same problem persists.

One of the problems is that this is the kind of fault can be present on your car but not be apparent until weather conditions provoke its use.

It has to now go back to Ford for further research. Anyone any ideas?

I am most suprised they did not test it after fitting it.

Any more info on the windscreen saga? I have exactly the same problem on a 2009 1.6 focus zetec, and like your own experience I have also been told that the windscreen will not be covered as it is not a Ford windscreen.

I have a further problem though, which is a power drain issue. Something is draining power from the battery when it is sat overnight and causing the electrics to fail. The current idea from the garage is that it is the windscreen elements. Now they refuse to investigate further until I replace the screen, which I can't afford at the mo as I have to pay to have some dents sorted (ice + wall = big scratch). So I guess I'm praying you might have found a temporary fix?

The only fix I got was that the garage that supplied it to me, nearly new, did it as part of their warranty, which was very good of them.

Can you not find the fuse that feeds the windscreen and remove it.That way it would prove if your fault was caused by the windscreen?

Good shout videodoctor.... otherwise Astret, perhaps one day a toolbox will accidentally fall off a shelf in your garage and smash your windscreen and you will have to claim for a new one on your insurance :S

To the OP:

1. £33 for a fuse?!?!?!?

2. Did the dealer tell you why the screen was not a Ford screen - i.e. why was it replaced on a car only 9 months old?

3. If it wasn't a Ford screen, was it still a heated screen? If not then how was it demisting the passenger side?

4. Have you told them you want the £33 for the fuse back since they obviously misdiagnosed the problem.
