Thought I'd vent my spleen!
Got my new wheels ('06 Prius) back in June. Some lowlife keyed it when it was parked on-street overnight within the first week of my owning the car. I moved the car to another street, where, the following night, it was keyed again. Called the Police on both occasions, and since there were no witnesses or CCTV, they couldn't help. Got crime ref numbers from the Police, notified the insurers. Sorted the damage myself, because I didn't want to claim on the insurance. I don't have parking outside my home, so I canvassed the area the next day to see if anyone fancied renting me a driveway. Got a driveway to rent, so it now resides overnight safe on a drive, and I'm £40 lighter every month.
Problem is, my insurance quote has now leapt from £330 to £500+ which is due to the two 'incidents'. Apparently these are logged as 'claims', even though technically I didn't lodge a claim as I chose to remedy the situation myself. Even by securing some off-road parking, my premium has gone through the roof.
So, the moral of this story seems to be that if you're unlucky enough to have your car vandalised, don't bother letting the Police know… It's far cheaper in the long-run!
Seems pretty crazy to me - what are your thoughts? If an insurer uses the terms 'incidents' and 'claims' to mean the same thing, then isn't that just tautology?
