Toyota Prius T3 - Insurance Renewal Gripe... - Pootle

Thought I'd vent my spleen!

Got my new wheels ('06 Prius) back in June. Some lowlife keyed it when it was parked on-street overnight within the first week of my owning the car. I moved the car to another street, where, the following night, it was keyed again. Called the Police on both occasions, and since there were no witnesses or CCTV, they couldn't help. Got crime ref numbers from the Police, notified the insurers. Sorted the damage myself, because I didn't want to claim on the insurance. I don't have parking outside my home, so I canvassed the area the next day to see if anyone fancied renting me a driveway. Got a driveway to rent, so it now resides overnight safe on a drive, and I'm £40 lighter every month.

Problem is, my insurance quote has now leapt from £330 to £500+ which is due to the two 'incidents'. Apparently these are logged as 'claims', even though technically I didn't lodge a claim as I chose to remedy the situation myself. Even by securing some off-road parking, my premium has gone through the roof.

So, the moral of this story seems to be that if you're unlucky enough to have your car vandalised, don't bother letting the Police know… It's far cheaper in the long-run!

Seems pretty crazy to me - what are your thoughts? If an insurer uses the terms 'incidents' and 'claims' to mean the same thing, then isn't that just tautology?

Look at it from the Insurers pov.

I agree that you've cost them no money. But what you have done is tell them that you are a customer who is now seemingly more likely to cost them money. This is their way of saying 'we'd rather you took your business elsewhere'. Take the hint.

BTW- You've done exactly the right thing by recording it. In fact if you didn't they could throw out any subsequent claim for 'non disclosure of a material fact'. So don't even be tempted to withold this kind of stuff.

IMO Don't beat yourself up about it. Just shop around and don't forget to mention your change of circumstances...you now have off road parking.

HTH.

Hi Ethan,

Fair points raised - especially the non-disclosure issue... I wasn't aware of that.

Off to shop around for some quotes!

Best, Pootle

I'd have kept quiet about the keying incidents, especially as you sorted them yourself. And I doubt I would have reported it to the police - it's just another statistic.

I would have notified your insurer that it was no longer kept at your home address overnight, but stressed it was now safer - they may not have viewed it that way though and therefore would shop around to find an insurer that looked on it more favourably come renewal time.

Rubbish, so if some git opens his door onto mine in a supermarket and dings my motor I'm supposed to tell the insurance company and let 'em put up my premium?

What a load of bull excrement!

Charming!

Well if you have worked in the Insurance industry for more than my 30+ years then I defer to your superior knowledge. If not.....

Lets try some common sense here. Taking your example. A car park ding is in orders of magnitude very different from suffering a case of vandalism causing potentially hundreds of pounds damage.

Small ding - don't bother.

Keying necessitating over say £75 of your cash to get it repaired, then it's in your interest to be scrupulously honest with your insurance company and report it. If they find out that you've sufffered damage before in the same circumstances as your current (much larger )claim and as the OP had, you have reported it to the Police but not to the company.

Don't you think any insurance company if they find this out will not seek to minimise their outgoings? Do you really think Insurance companies are by nature, kind, forgiving and generous? Thats an interesting notion that I have no desire to try for myself. good luck to you on that one.

Common sense is what is lacking here!

I might have known you'd be in the 'industry'!

So how big / expensive does a car park 'ding' have to be before it becomes notifiable?

How small / inexpensive does a 'keying' have to be before it's not relevant?

You might like to draw a line in the snow.

Simple logic says ..

Report to police = tell insurer.

Sounds like a good yardstick.

I think I have already covered all of these in my previous posting.

But I would suggest you use your own judgement.

Agree - once reported to the Police, you need to disclose to Ins. Co. - data doesn't rot.
