I'm afraid that it's how the industry works these days.
There are very few 'mechanics' out there now, just a lot of 'fitters'. The problem is especially noticeable with main dealers.
Most lack any sort of first-principles mechanical or electrical knowledge or diagnostic skills. All they can do is read fault codes and swap parts out at random until faults go away.
I agree it is mind-boggling that they've charged you for this. All they've done is tried various solutions and none of them worked. I would not pay them, they have not done what I asked them to do.
