Volvo V70 2002 model - Gear Selection Problem (only when cold) - ChiMan

I have recently purchased this vehicle from a main dealer. Only had it just over a week. I have found that 1st and Reverse gear can be difficult to engage in cold weather, particularly after the vehicle has been standing .

I have noted the comments on HJ's Car Review page and suspect that the cause may well be the old and sticky grease on the gearbox input shaft. Requires the gearbox removal, cleaning and replacing with new grease. (plus a new clutch while it is in bits)

I have been looking on the net and found a reference to a Volvo Techical Service Bulletin no #4347 issued to all Volvo dealter in November 2005. This deals with this problem.

The question is, how can I get to read this bulletin in full? It seems to me that the document may provide me with something to quiz the dealer over and knowing its contents would be very useful.

The car is great in all other respects but I do not want to be landed with a huge bill!

I found that I could buy TSBs from Toyota via a european site they have - I think its actually intended for small non-franchise repairers to use, so meeting the european directive on allowing repairs.

Volvo Europe may have something similar?

Many thanks. Will give this some thought. HJ has suggested the same but direct from a friendly Volvo dealer.

Take out a warranty from one of the companies and it goes a long way to taking the sting out of bills. I have done this on my Volvo and it has paid for itself over and over.

Hi

Good advice. The car has a 12 month Volvo warranty for a start. When this runs out, I shall look around. It is a sign of the times that cars these days are beyond the home mechanic! You just couldn't beat lying under a car on cold wet concrete with frozen fingers!

Dear All

I took my Volvo V70 in this week and they took out the gearbox, cleaned the old and sticky gease off the gearbox input shaft, replenished the shaft with special new grease and hey presto - Problem cured!

I am sure it helped that the garage could see that I had a good idea about the likely problem and remedy, so thanks again to all and particularly to HJ for including this type of detail on the Car Reviews.

Garages, like Doctors, must get fed up with drivers (and patients) quoting details found on the Internet but you cannot deny the value of being able to research the experience of others.
