Can anyone tell me, does the A4 diesel cabriolet have a cam belt that needs changing at 60,000 miles?

I test drove one today and when I asked if the cam belt had been changed the guy said that they don't have cam belts, but a cam chain which will last forever.

Is this true?

I always thought VAG had cam belts on their diesel engines.But ask a VAG main agent to be sure yourself.

There are Audi's that do have chains but not many. You will have to tell me the engine code or at least exactly which engine it had. Regards Peter

1.9, 2.5. 3.0 diesels are listed as having cam belts and the change time is 40,000miles as per VAG web site.

The newer 2.0 tdi engines have 80,000 mile cam belt intervals after a general beefing up of the belt and tensioners etc. I dont think any Audi diesel after 2004 would have a chain cam.

A cam belt should last at least 80k miles but the 40k is a fairly new directive from VAG certainly in the last 4 months seem to remember a lot of discusion on this forum about it ,even so the seller of the car in question was telling porkies.

The 2005 > BDW 2.393 ltr petol Audi engine has timing chains located at the rear of the engine. That is why the OP needs to declare the engine code. Regards Peter
