Focus TDCi - 2003 - EGR valve - Fat Envelope

After a few weeks of investigating an intermittant non-starting problem, it appears that the EGR valve is a bit clogged up with carbon from the diesel engine.

Anybody know if this is something that can be cleaned or will it need replacement?

Also, how much am I looking to pay? Have been quoted £300 by the guy who was looking at it for a replacement valve but thought I would check it out before I went ahead as funds are low!!

You do not say what type of engine it is but a Mondeo takes around one hour to strip, clean and replace but while you are at it change the glowplugs and clean the manifold three hours max for the whole job.Its situated on the front left hand when stood with the bonnet open looking at the engine from the front.

Having said that your problem sounds as though you have something else wrong have you checked the camshaft sensor more likely than the EGR.The car would run and start with or without the egr in fact many people block it off and put the crud into the atmosphere

Thanks for the response.

It is a 1.8l TDCi engine.

The valve is located on the top left(ish) of the engine block - you have to remove the plastic cover to get at it. It is definitely the cause of the problem, as I can guarantee if it doesn't start, a couple of reasonable taps to the casing using the hammer I now carry round in the car for this exact reason (!!) means it then starts first time

Even easier to remove and replace new ones availabe from ebay at very reasonable prices, no more than half an hour if you have a good set of tools.
