2004 Golf IV Petrol - Stick vibrations - hammerzeit

hi, got an '04 2.0L golf iv 2.0 with 60000 mi. recently the shifter started vibrating while driving. it starts buzzing at about 2200 rpm, doesn't matter what gear or if the car is loaded or stationary in neutral. vibes worst in 1, 3, 5. it's annoying in 2, 4 but not as bad.

took the car to the dealer, they said they found the front exhaust hanger had come unwelded. they rewelded it but this didn't fix the problem. they say the vibrations must be normal then. (they're not.)

vibrations are worst when you actually rest your hand on the stick. if you barely touch it and don't push it against the gear box at all it doesn't vibe much. can you tighten it up so it doesn't push against the gear box?

i found the reverse spring broken after i brought it to the dealers and they rewelded the hanger. they denied any wrongdoing and i'm stuck fixing that myself. it was doing this before the spring went wonky.

Ok now it just started making an unhealthy grinding noise on idle, and when you switch the engine off the car rattles hard for a second and you hear some clicks under the hood. What the hell..?

You say 'welded the hanger'. If this was an exhaust hanger then you noise may be something hitting the heat sheild. Regards Peter

hi peter, thanks for all your help so far.

the dealership said they removed the heat shield and found that the exhaust hanger weld had failed, and that's what they think the noise source was. so they sent it to a muffler shop to be re-welded. but when i got the car back it was still the same. seems it's getting worse.

i had the windows down while driving today and i notice the engine really rattles now. it's like a tinny ticking noise whose frequency is rpm-dependant.
