seat altea poor performance - brightspark

my seat altea ecomotive with the 1600vw engine has completed 3000 miles from new in 3 months the average consumption is 47 mpg. It has been checked by the dealer on 3 occasions who says all settings are within the peramaters issued by seat . Government figures are 54_68 mpg the dealer now says I cannot expect the car to reach even the lowest figure of 54 mpg! .

It has now developed a habit of occasionally when doing 60mph jumping from showing 48mpg on the trip computer to over 100mpg! and the car feels like it is a 105 bhp car this may last for a mile or 3/4 miles then reverts to its usual dull performance. The dealer is unable to explain this and says I have no case for rejecting the car.The car will not cruise at 60 mph in fifth unless you keep the accelerator about half open.

Has anyone out there experienced this type of fault?

I don't know what's wrong specifically in your case.

However, I would contribute a couple of points:

1. I presume you have the 1.6TDi; these VAG diesels take a good few miles to bed in and achieve optimum perfromance/economy. I've had two TDi engines, 1.9 and 2.0, and I'd say that they both only loosened up after about 10k miles, maybe longer.

2. Are you measuring your mpg using the driver infromation system? This is really only a guide and you would get a more accurate measurement by doing several 'brim to brim' fills and calculating the mileage between fills. (1 gallon = 4.55 litres).

Maybe ask another dealer to do a diagnostic.

What sort of roads/traffic do you mainly encounter? Could this be a factor ? Where do you buy your fuel?

Hope you get it sorted.
