Not us, because Mrs O is working. But even 40 yrs ago i thought twice about risking heading for Bridlington at Easter. I think we did it once or twice, with a very early start and then returning just after lunch.

Even then, it was solid traffic still heading into the resort (well, it was a resort in those days) with a clear road out.

Anyone go for it?

I was fettling the X type this morning and the local news was on - main message was to avoid the A64 - very busy around York and into Scarborough!

When we go to Brid we do the same up as you. Up early - no choice with a 3 year old! - arrive in time for a breakfast cuppa then leave about 2.

We do use the holiday route (B1251, left at the Seaways bikers cafe in Fridaythorpe) which sees less traffic than the A166 and is a pleasant trip across The Wolds.

Off to Grantham tomorrow, but it's A1 almost all the way so shouldn't be too bad.

Maybe I'm just boring, but even if I weren't a church organist I'd still not want to travel very far over Easter or any bank holiday week-end. I just don't like traffic jams or the crowds when I get there.

If I wanted to go to, say. Bridlington for a day I think I'd choose a fine Saturday or Sunday outside holiday time. But maybe it's the camaraderie of everyone having a happy time together that attracts people. Perhaps SWMBO (who feels as I do) and I are what the Australians call wowsers.

Nope. We were due to go to Snowdonia but my better half is not well so we'll stay put for the week instead. My two year old doesn't mind where she is, as long as there's food and potential to let off steam, but I'll miss getting out on the hills...

Problem with a pleasant Sunday is that the byways'll be full of people who think the speed limit is always 40 whatever the surroundings.

Happy Easter, btw

We usually avoid bank holiday driving - it's never worth the hassle and not really necessary once you're retired.

Went for a nice long walk this morning, though.

Just a slow pootle to Oxfordshire and back today to see family. An absolute pleasure on near deserted roads. Comfortably under an hour each way (about 50 miles), without smashing the speed limits.

Happy Easter to all! :-)

I'm working most of the weekend... but had a drive round Worcesteshire today in Noggin the Nog my new classic purchase... a Princess 2, 2.2HLS auto... with the reg beginning NOG!

Sounds good, b308. Princesses were underrated in their day, perhaps because too many of them weren't put together properly. But that 6-cylinder 2.2 engine is lovely and sweet: I think it was based on the engine in the Maxi 1750, two of which served me very well and reliably in the 70s.

Its the 6 cyl version of the Maxi engine, E series, developed at the same time...

Driving it reminds me just how comfortable cars used to be before the manufuacturers were pesuaded by the motoring journos that handling was the most important thing after the 0-60 time... One of those areas that we have gone backwards... As one of the reviews in one of the Classic mags stated, forget trying to get from A to B as quick as possible, just let it waft you there instead...

Wandering off topic; I bought a new one in 1980, and although it seemed to be rusting from day one I still managed to get 14 reliable years out of it.

Much preferred the far better looking Princess.

My dad had a P reg Maxi 1750 when we were kids, which we all remember fondly. It was reliable, practical, went quite well, and was the first car I'd ever seen with a five speed gearbox! :-)

This was replaced by a T registration Princess 2 2.0 HL. By far and away the best riding, most spacious car I remember from my childhood. This was also reliable and served us well. I seem to remember dad bypassed the thermoswitch on the rad that controlled the cooling fan, and installed a manual toggle switch on the dash, but other than that I don't recall a single problem with it until the MOT man took exception to the extent of the rot and condemned it. The car wasn't even seven years old when this happened.

As well as these two, we also had an Allegro for a while. The Allegro was the only BL car I seem to recall deserved its reputation. It was a dog of a car. Burned and leaked enough oil to need weekly top ups, leaked like a sieve in any more than light drizzle, bits fell off it constantly, and what didn't fall off rotted into nothing in an incredibly short time.

The Maxi and Princess were both ace, though! :-)

Yep mine's got that! It seems the thermostat only trips the fan at quite a high temperature so everyone on the Princess Forum with the 2.2 engine fits this mod so if you are stuck in traffic you can stop it getting too hot too quickly!

TBH we had a S reg 2.2 back in the 80s and I didn't have any problems with it...

Ahhhh, nice. I had two Princesses and loved 'em, although the 2000HL wasn't such a sweet motor as the 1800. My father had a lovely automatic 2.2.
A few years ago I was passing a garage forecourt in deepest rural France when I spotted a Tahiti Blue Princess parked on the front. I nearly ricked my neck...
Before the Princess days I had two Maxis and a Morris 1800 Mk 3. I was a BMC man until 1982 when I failed to buy a new Ambassador because the dealer only wanted me to have the one he had in the showroom. I happened to spot a three-month-old Honda Accord at a nearby dealer, bought it and the rest is history.

I had a 9 month old Allegro for nearly 2 years. It was trouble-free realy, apart from a loud 'bee like' buzzing noise at 60 mph which came and went and we were never able to diagnose. However the oil consumption was sureal ! I used to do about 100 miles during the week and about 100 miles at the weekend, and most times this meant about 1/2 pint of oil to top up ie about 450 miles to the pint. I never saw any smoke even when following someone else driving, and also never saw any oil leaks either. The spark plugs were 'textbook' looking and it remains a mystery still today how this happened.

We drove to Liverpool Good Friday lunchtime. Not been for 30plus years. Our plan was for an overnight stay, but we enjoyed it so much we stayed a second night. Fantastic Maritime Museum, although not so keen on the Tate. Great exhibition on the Atlantic Convoys which was of personal interest as my father was in the MN and sailed many times to N. America, Murmansk & Archangel. Driving home late afternoon on the BH Sunday to West Yorks the M62/M60 was virtually deserted. Highly recommend the Radisson Blu hotel, with reasonable parking charges (£11.50 for 24 hours) at the nearby NCP and a 10 minute stroll to the Albert Dock area and museums.

Drove up to Northumberland from East Anglia on Good Friday.

Came back Easter Monday.

Apart from a huge jam on the Friday caused by an overturned caravan near Peterborough, no problems at all.

The hottest day of the year, so far! 28.5C seen on the car thermometer, up in the hills, during a nice drive. (Only 21C on the coast, at home, but still pleasant.) Back through the orange groves of San Martin and Secadero, where the warmth of the sun on the orange blossoms has filled the air with their strong perfume.

(Costa del Sol, not far from Gibraltar)
