Looking for a cheap diesel motor for a friend - ValiantSaint

Hi everyone. A friend of mine has just found out his '96 reg'd Vectra has failed it's MOT, so he's looking to get rid of it and buy a cheap diesel motor to bomb around in for a while. He hasn't got a great deal of money to play with, as he has just had a new addition to the family a few weeks back. What sort of diesels can be picked up for around 500 to a 1000 pounds, that will last longer than two weeks? (Not many I can imagine!)

Many thanks in advance : )

Think laterally - look for good MPG, not necessarily diesel.

1.4 Skoda Octavia and petrol Toyota Carina/avensis both return mid 40s. Regular poster Humph Backbridge reported similar MPG from 2 litre Mondeo vs 2.2. Signum - one petrol, one diesel.

Best bet might be to search a few car review websites for 4/5 door cars by MPG to generate a shortlist, then follow usual Backroom advice and choose based on the condition of what's on the market when he goes to buy, rather than looking for specific model/age/mileage.

Use autotrader to select a price range and specify diesel, and when you have a list of cars, come back to Honest John and sling them in the Car by Car breakdown for the best advice on what';s good and bad.

I just tried it and the first car was a Peugeot 306 GLX for £890.

Best of luck

Be brave buy what people are afraid of!

a BX Diesel Turbo for £200 did me for 25k over 2 years without drama, but it was a leap of faith and I did change the octopus in mid ownership. an enjoyable and rewarding job, but not if you have to pay somebody to do it!

Now I regret selling it in a fit of peek when I found a dribble of water from the water pump at 125k.

Thanks to everyone for replying so quickly! I think the best bet by looking at the reviews on this site seems to be a Mondeo. are the diesel versions of this car any good? (Mondeo II)

Thanks again : )

I always thought Mondy diesels were a bit flaky but there are plenty around and many are still used as mini cabs. Mind you I wouldn't hesitate to go for a petrol mondeo 1.8. Good cheap cars and reasonably easy to work on and easy to get spares.

Does any one have any ideas as to what others would be a good car to go for? I was sitting behind a Citroen Xantia on the way back home, are they any good? (They seem to be quite cheap.......)

"are the diesel versions of this car any good? (Mondeo II)"

Diesel engines in the Mondeo II come in two forms - the old fashioned TDDi ones and the more modern common rail TDCi ones. The latter are more sophisticated - basically quicker, more economical, and quieter. The advantage of the former is that you are less likely to be hit with a very large repair bill.

Citroen Xantia and Peugeot 406 diesels are also pretty reasonable - if you get one in good condition.

as always, if you're looking for a car for up to £1,000, go for condition rather than make of car. any car is something of a gamble at this price. depending more on how it's been looked after by previous owners than what make it is.

Definitely agree on condition.

all your diesel savings will be for nought the first time you get a bill.

Sometimes that 2.4 is the better bet. Depends on what you come across.

a good, cheap non-diesel would be a Mitsubishi carisma. Favoured by older drivers so often serviced and well cared for, ours did 45mpg whatever the kind of driving. although a bit dull and unpopular, they are reliable, spacious cars. Nissan almera is another under-rated cheapy.

i know of someone in a similar position who has just bought a Vreg Peugeot estate 406 diesel.

he paid £500 for it + £200 for a service. although he needs to replace some parts of the suspension which will cost another 200 odd quid, it has no issues doing regular 500 mile round trips each weekend and will return the best part of 60mpg on a run. and has plenty of space that he needs being an estate.

iMo an absolute bargin of a car.
